Gearbox "Clunk"

Featured Replies

Hi all

Had my Octy II Estate, 2012 reg,  for about 5 weeks.  Done about 2k miles myself, total is now about 74k

Noticed today that when I change down from 3rd to 2nd there is a huuuugggeeeee clunk noise.

Anyone noticed/experienced similar  ???

Car had new gearbox and clutch at 71k last November with previous owner, replaced by a Skoda dealer.

Due to this am a tad wary of any gearbox or clutch issues.

Receipt I have says that replacement was as a result of "noise when accelerating but noise stops when not accelerating"

Repairs/replacements if necessary will I guess be covered under warranty by Skoda.

I also have a 12-month warranty from independent dealer that I bought car from.

Any info/advice gratefully received

Thanks

Graham

Shouldn't do that of course.  I would say go straight back to the dealer for warranty work.

Thanks Skodacarman.

Have taken more attention today and realise there is a "clunk" to some degree whenever I change gear and I bring clutch up.  More noticeable when I change to 2nd and even more noticeable when I change from 3rd to 2nd and spectacular when I do an aggressive gear change 3rd to 2nd.

Mr Local Skoda dealer can take a look when I have my service next week.

Cheers

DMF maybe ??? Hope they get it sorted for you.

Aha .........    It was due to the gearbox support bracket coming adrift (or never being tightened properly in the first place) and the gearbox having a little wander around every time I changed gear.

I think the bracket attaches the gearbox to the chassis when it is screwed in properly  (correct me if I'm wrong)

But for now I am clunk-less  :-)

Has it ever had the gearbox oil changed? Also, the subfame bushes can crack which will cause engine and gearbox movement, just an idea!

yep, gearbox replaced last November, just 4k miles ago, so I assume I have nice fresh gearbox oil inside there.   :-)

Problem was the gearbox support bracket being completely adrift.  (gearbox change was done for previous owner by a different dealer, so a bit of hassle to prove they didn't do things properly and to cover the 80 quid it's gonna cost me to get a nice new bracket fitted properly)

In a way, a pit peeved, but happy that it's nothing serious.

Good news then and a cheap fix in comparison to what it could have been. Mine is a little clunky still after a gearoil change and a new dmf and clutch fairly recently. The issue is damage to two small round bushes on the subframe that hold the engine and gearbox still, I've got new ones in the house but just haven't got round to doing them yet, hopefully that's all it is!
