Trouble getting into first gear most 1.9tdi cars read this...

Featured Replies

Hello 3 days ago I bought my first skoda after having VWs since I could drive , ive now got a 2003 superb 1.9tdi AWX engine , and ive been struggling to get it into 1st gear when fully stopped at lights etc , tried double clutching that works sometimes but still can be quit stiff to get into first.

The way to get it into 1st gear smoothly is to when your slowing down coming to a stop when the car reaches under 10mph with the clutch pressed put the gear stick into neutral and move it all the way to the right twice in qucik succession then it will slip straight into 1st gear nice and freely just before you come to a stop.

Have you reset the gearbox linkage?

Agreed.

If it's not that, then this sounds most like a dragging clutch so try bleeding the slave cylinder.

Yeah linkage reset

Id change the gearbox fluid aswell, nice easy job

Whats a gear linkage reset?

Yea im getting the timing belt & water pump done so may aswell do the gear oil .

So could this be a knackered clutch or gearbox aswell ?

Have a look at the below video.

Dead easy.

Bet its not as easy as it looks when you doin it to a car lol

How often does this need doin ?

Bet its not as easy as it looks when you doin it to a car lol

Quite easy

10-15min job

Only needs done if your having selection issues

Clutch (meaning plates) problem is possible, but it's honestly more likely to be the linkage or clutch drag caused by the hydraulics needing bleeding.

Ok so ill try what he does on video first if its cables bleed if its hydraulic , and change gear oil cheers

Most common causes for this;

Linkage out of alignment

Old gear oil

Clutch/Hydraulic problems (clutch no fully disengaging)

Broken shift fork inside gearbox

Worn syncro/bearings

I've experienced three of those in my previous car (Seat Cordoba PD130).

My gearstick selector in my car looks nothing like that on the video.

Mines a white plastic ball in a black plastic plate , and I can't see the gear selector on the gearbox it must be way back
