No, not a race dit but some thoughts on the vRS gearbox. Greatly enjoyed the last 9 months and now quite used to a diesel 6 speed coming from a petrol 5 speed, especially a nice 'snicky' one like this . That said, my one (very slight) gripe would be how soon you run out of steam in second gear. Sure, the accleration's great but always feel slightly peeved at then having to find third so quickly (in order to really go places) having topped out at 40-45 mph in second, especially in the middle of an overtake that needed to start in second gear :eek: .

Believe I've read on the site that 05 MY cars had gearboxes with significantly shorter gearing than previous models which is fine in theory. Can't help but think though that, in real world motoring, the extra acceleration generated by shorter gearing is then wasted by having to effect an earlier upshift in the middle of a manoeuvre. Any similar or contrasting thoughts or experiences? Has anyone driven older and newer vRS to compare and were there any cons from having a taller geared 'box?

It is a short gear, but it's the gear with the most pull, really puts you in your seat, I love it, just wish it lasted for 30 secs

I love second too! Having said that though third is a better option for long blasts of speed. Hey, I love all my gears! (and the engine and everything else!)

It only has a shorter final gear, iirc, all the other gears remain the same This just means that the new cars have a "theoretical" lower top speed and worse fuel economy.......

Hmmmm smoky...

If your car is standard, change at 3k into third, and ride the wave of torque. Mine will pull to 5k, but i change at 4k to take advantage of my peak torque at 2.6k.

I do think a 5 speed box would suit the car better with longer gears. 6 speed is just a gimmick in my view.

I agree, our 5 speed pd130 Superb at work is much better ratiod than the Fabia IMHO.
