Good afternoon chaps.

Reet, I thought I'd change the oil and filter in my 1.9TD as I don't know exactly its history. I did the research and purchased proper oil/filter etc and am delighted to announce, following the removal of a gert lump of plastic sheet from under the engine that it was straightforward. :D  I did get rather alarmed initially as the engine was completely bone dry on the exterior and being rather more used to old Landrovers and AJS motorcycles you find that an engine that isn't leaking is due to it having run out of oil!

Anyhow, to the point, being of an inquisitive nature I found a couple of gubbinsesses on my travels and I wonder if any of the more learned members here could say what their rôle in life is? 1/ a small lump bolted to the underside of the alloy sump with electric string coming from it. 2/ approximately level with the drivers backside on the underfloor a block with lots of (what looks like) cooling fins on it - I guess it's not a bugging device c/o MI5.

Kind regards Julian.

1 No idea

2 Fuel cooler return to fuel tank.

Number 1 will be the oil level sensor.

Many thanks chaps. Fuel cooler - blimey, never heard of one of those before, I thought fuel was generally warmed up a touch to stop waxing in winter - my Peugeot 306 had fuel heated off engine coolant. And the sensor, I guess it makes sense, no doubt it puts a light on the dash on?

Kind regards, Julian

Fuel is cooled before it gets to the tank to stop condensation build up in the tank.

AFAIK fuel coolers are unique to PD engines. As the fuel is fed into the cylinder head on route to the injectors on these it has the side effect that the excess fuel 'leak off' returning to the tank is often quite hot, something that doesn't happen so much on other types of diesel fuel systems.
