Scout rear axle noise?

Featured Replies

Early days yet but I can hear what appears to be a pinion type noise from the rear of my new Scout.

Anyone experienced this before?

I'm tuned into it now and can almost play tunes at motorway speeds!

I'm 99% convinced it's a pinion type noise as it's associated with load, i.e. on and off the accelerator - loading up the drivetrain.

Not driven ours on the motorway yet, but noticed any specific noises on A roads round here (upto 60mph) - not sure i'd know what 'pinion' noise sounds like though!

Could be rear diff whine, worth getting it in to be looked at, haldex can have these issues big whine problem in Freelanders

I'm probably going to let it "progress" a little and maybe drop it in when it gets a few K's under it.

I'll keep you posted.

My biggest concern is the lack of quality service/dealers around here!

I had a sort of humming noise from the rear of my 2010 Octavia II (Haldex 4) which was present on some journeys and not others. The rear diff seized within some 1000 miles of the noise starting.

I have a humming from the rear of my new Scout around 60-70mph.   It doesn't appear to be load dependent,  and is present when the clutch is dipped.  I'm only 1k miles in,  and had assumed this was down to the noisy Pirelli P7s fitted as it appears worse on some road surfaces.

What tyres are you on?

Ours is on P7's also, i'll try and wrestle the keys from swmbo and take it for a spin and report back.

I have an O3 Scout and also noticed a faint whine at similar speeds. I'm not yet too worried about it, the car only has about 1500km on it and still feels very tight.

If the whine is still there around 4000km in I'll be getting the the dealer to take a look for sure.

Quite possible it's just a harmonic/resonance NVH issue at particular speeds, in which case it's unlikely to cause long term problems

I have this problem with my VRS 4X4 (essentially the same car) I have been told that it's just a characteristic of the car........

I’ve now got the same noise since changing the drive shaft... I’ve got a constant whine like a wheel bearing and also under load on motorway, take your foot off the power and it goes bk to a normal “whine” put foot down and you get a sort of “wow wow wow wow” like something spinning out of sync... really need to investigate this. Can drive shafts cause this problem?

Well I have got the same 4x4 Haldex Gen 5 but it is attached to a petrol (so you would argue I should hear any noises better)

I have never had any droning, whining or any noises on or off the power. It is generally a pretty quiet car for an Octy 3 and that is after 4 years of driving.

Tyres can make a lot of noise, sawtoothing can happen quickly but it is a constant drone.

The Haldex 5 as fitted to the Octavia 3 should not be noisy. It is not a characteristic of the car, mine doesn't do it at all
