Speedo Calibration

Featured Replies

I've noticed that the speedo on my Octy is at least 10% out in comparison to the Road Angel GPS. I was just wondering if it is possible to re-calibrate the speedo through Vag-Com. I don't even know where to start.

No idea, Des :(

One thought though - have you tried comparing GPS speed and speedo speed with the speed you can get displayed on the climatronic screen? There's a guide somewhere detailing all the things you can look at with the climatronic screen by pressing particular buttons.

I would have thought it's possible. I'm thinking of Police forces. But do they change any electronic components or is it as simple as changing some parameter in software / vagcom

The speed signal on climatronic is only the same speed signal as the dash gets anyhow.

As far as I know if cant be calibrated like the fuel gauge etc with VAG COM. Not very many do rear correct especially at higher speeds. But most err on the side of caution by over reading.

When I cross-checked the Climatronic speed reading against speedo and GPS a while ago, I found the former to be more accurate than the speedo - although it too overrread compared with GPS speed readings.

Is that just down to the mechanical inconsistencies of the speedo mechanism?

It's designed that way AFAIK, the speed shown on the climate/vagcom is intended to be more accurate than the dash which should read slightly higher.

Des,

How about little bluetac blobs on the speedo...apply while driving with gps, job done when no gps is present :D

Thinking of somthing similar or a modified dial paper when I go to my 235's :D

Nice Colin. Can I see it when it's done:D

My speedo was also 10% overreading against gps, but since my new wheels and tyres, it now reads exactly the same. As predicted by the tyre calculator in the excellent value FREEDOM section of the forum. ;)

(can i put my fish and chip link back now :D )

Shifty - perhaps you should be asking for your own "partner forum"... or offering to sponsor the site ;)

You could have a banner ad at the top amonst Jabba, Awesome and the rest.

Ok the bluetac was a funny...I'd personally use some stickie paper...

@shifty send me amail we can disucss.

@goochie, not bad idea, like the concept of level playing fields and all that...it all depends how far the players want to go before making divits the groundspeople notice.

@Des, I just pick a rev number based on a gear when in 30 zone, 40 zone 50 etc

The speedo is never that far out, but tend to only go over the speedo when I have the gps on. Human error and all that.

BTW is it possible for tom tom to flash or colour shift if your over a limit, a bit like road angel?

How accurate is the likes of the Tom Tom GPS?

Used one the other week while going down to london. Ended up using Tom Tom for the speedo instead on the Mondeo's speedo.

Some very good ideas there, particularly liked the Bluetack blobs. :finger:;)

I was thinking more on the lines of a rubber band anchored to the 0 and the tip of the needle, just that I can't find the correctly calibrated rubber band.

Apparently dealers can request to have the speedo re-calibrated from Skoda for Police cars etc. One of their nice technicians comes down and carries out the work.

Hi,

Speedos in police cars are not the same as in normal cars. They are calibrated ones.

I have checked my TOM TOM navigator against a calibrated car and it was either spot on or occaisionally 1mph undereading.

Regards
