GTB owners, fitting advice

Featured Replies

Just put a GTB hybrid on and got a few questions.

What have people done for the supporting bracket on the bottom?

I've got the DIY oil return pipe but even with slightly bending the top and bottom of the original to make it less of a bend, it still seems a really bad fit.

I presume you're on about a GTB welded to a stock manifold? Is it a 2260 or a 1756?

For the supporting bracket I just made a mock one up out of cardboard first, then knocked one up in work out of steel and used the original hole in the block that's there for the standard support bracket.

As for the oil return... the 1756 isn't so bad, but the 2260 is very tight indeed. First off split the standard braided section from the original oil feed return in a vice, then I had to cut down the remaining parts so that I could angle the linking rubber pipe correctly. There's no way it would've fitted without chopping some of it off. May be some pics in my project thread...

It's not ideal, but I've had no problems since fitting it (touchwood!).

2260 on stock manifold yeah.

Guess I'll get started making a bracket up. Didn't know if anyone had one ready made yet or something oem that would fit.

To be honest for the hassle I just thought it as easy to knock something up. it doesn't have to be pretty as you're never going to see it!

Good choice on the turbo by the way ;)  I hope John is mapping for you?!

How much did you chop off each end of the oil return? Just thinking in my head that's all :D

He isn't mapping it I'm afraid! I recommended him but a big company local to me is doing the job.

Hope for around 260bhp'ish.

The top ends just been rebuilt with a brand new camshaft from darkside, new intercooler and pipework, egr delete, inlet manifold all cleaned and polished inside and out, full Miltek decat, custom TIP with jabba cone in a box filter with a pd160 intake.

sounds nice whos mapping it for you? pm me

The best way I've found on the three I've fitted is to cut the oil return pipe, nearly right through, that fits onto the turbo, then re angle it to point towards the piece fitted to sump, then weld up the cut ;)

Well ive got it all fitted now, it just doesn't seem a good fit. Want it to be 100% that's all.

Will look into cutting them down tomorrow.

I'm tempted to just get some different pipe, a small 45° angle pipe would work much better IMO, even a 90° at a push.

What sort of temperatures does the oil get to on track days etc with these gtb's fitted?

Was looking at this

http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&alt=web&id=331514004185&globalID=EBAY-GB

Says max temp 180° but not sure what it will be like sitting inches from an exhaust manifold really...

Makes me question the basic blue silicone pipe for the DIY oil return to start with.

Those pipes in your link are not for oil, you need flourosilicone lined pipe for oil or fuel.

That pipe supplied by xman imo is too thick, just search ebay for oil hose for something more suitable ;)

if your going on track you need a oil cooler without a doubt, mine saw dangerously high oil temps just doing the 15 minute sessions at Combe, was upto 140 :(

Seen a few oil coolers, not that exspencive so might get one fitted at some point.

Don't think it'll be on any track days, just thinking ifs and buts really.

Make sure you don't go silly with an external oil cooler/rad and associated line diameter fitment generally - 10 or 12 is okay, just be careful to not effect pressure and oil pump, stock one on fabia is underneath right? looks half decent to me!

If it gets fitted, I'll do an oil pressure test before and after and see how it's affected.

You'd want thermostatic setup too.
