I saw an Audi A3 today

Featured Replies

until I realised in my slightly alcoholic stupor that it was actually a 5 door fabia mk3. :D

It looks quite nice in resplendent white.

it looked pretty cool with its black roof

I thought its fair extended back end gave it decent bootspace without making it look like an estate

It didn't make me wish to get off my pint in hand picnic bench seat for a further look but I thought "mmmm, nice A3" - until I saw the wheel centre badge.

Is this a vote for the fabia mk3?  I actually don't know as saw this vehicle from a small distance and wasn't actually saw what it was!! :D

An A3 Sportback parked next to my Mk3 Estate the other day.

From the side profile at the back they are near identical, and I had never noticed it before either.

Where the bootlid drops into the number plate area and down is all very very similar.

I too am a fan of the new A3, I think it looks really sharp, so by definition so does my Fabia!

Beer Goggles ?    :D

Sure it wasn't a Rapid Spaceback? ;)

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Seams more likely,

as the All New 3rd Generation is an stumpy short thing with little rear space.

Oh come on guys.

Not a 'its pretty much an audi' thread, surely? ;)

Pretty much a Polo, A1, Ibiza only it is all new with some of the elements of the MQB & the DNA of the Rally car.

I really like my vehicle, but there's no way I'd ever compare it to an Audi A3 Sportback. It's good, but not that good. Just my opinion though before I get flamed for it.

a3's arent exactly the bee's knees though mate.

My brothers had no end of problems with his.

Albeit it is a nice ride, comfy, smooth, quiet etc.

The OP is not comparing a Fabia to an A3 is he, just saying he spotted one and it looked like a A3 (A3 Sportback maybe.)

So if he spotted a Rapid Spaceback with the Black it might have been that.

We need the OP back to comment on our comments maybe.

I know what hes saying

But the convos progressed a little ;).

Us skoda owners are always comparing to another VAG manufacturer which is considered higher class.

Its what skoda owners do best. ;).

You're right. I had a Superb Elegance Estate and thought it stood up well against the Passat Estate and Audi A6 Avant.

Ive got a mk2 fab HTP 70 and mums got a 15 plate polo 1 litre 60 courtesy car atm

All ive done is compare...

1 litre engine is too small for the size car though. Not as torquey as the HTP by any means

It just shows how much difference there can be between 1 litre cars. My previous car was the Ford Focus 1.0 with the 125 bhp engine. I took it to Superchips and had it remapped to 150hp.

But that had a turbo, and alot more expensive engine than this.

The 1.0 vag engine doesnt. Its just a little 3 cylinder NA petrol.

Probably fine in the citigo/up/mii but not enough in a size bigger car.

It struggles on our hills in the peak district and the needs to be revved high (Although it does seem to thrive from revs). Even with 1 or 2 people in.

True, I had forgotten about the turbo. Had to laugh at Autocar this week. Ford are putting the same engine in the latest Mondeo. It's good in the Fiesta/Focus, however I think it's stretching a bit far fit the Mondeo. Just shows you though, that small capacity petrol engines are here to stay.

I do think naturally aspirated engines are defo a thing of the past with modern cars. Defo getting more complicated.

Im not sure about torque figures, but 125bhp is probably 1.6NA or 1.8NA territory, so not rediculous in a mondeo/passat sized car.

But weight kills everything. Whats nippy in a 1200kg car can be considered underpowered in 1500kg car. Economy and emissions is all some folk are bothered about though, in the age where cars are getting faster and faster. 300bhp and more in a medium sized family hatch for example (one for you there RKeith)

I expect it could well have been a rapid thingy after seeing that photo.  I did only get a view from the side, I admit.

Ironically, my Fabia was taken away by the dealers to retrofit the heated seats... And they've left me with an Audi A3 S-line Sportback for the weekend. Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful machine with one hell of a kick of torque between gears 2/3 at 2.5k RPM, but it just feels so squeezed inside and the ride is far too stiff now that I've tasted the comfort of our Fabias. The wife agrees, we just want our superb Fabia back asap!

What was it a Diesel or Petrol A3 Sportback S-Line.?

They are stiff or a harder ride when on the bigger wheels and low profiles.

It's a diesel 1.6 TDI, and yep with mahoosive alloys and low profiles. But I imagine even with smaller alloys, the S-Line suspension set up for a sportier ride just makes it too firm for around town driving... Which is where our Fabia shines.

Not like the 1.6tdi ive driven then..

Maybe try the 2.0 cr 184 ;)

Yeah the a3's are firmer

Brothers isnt a sporty spec, its got normal tyres on. So its firm but remains comfortable at the same time.

Maybe more your taste

Seen plenty Audi A1's. Pig-ugly car compared to the Fabia. Interior cramped with circular vents etc.. Shares the same contour line along the side as the Skoda, and shares far too many components for any Audi owner's liking, but I like that fact!

The Audi A1, not the A3, is really the model equivalent of the Skoda Fabia, but it just isn't. :)

Given the amount of alcohol I had consumed at that point, and confusing it with a fabia III, do you really think I would have noticed the engine tone / badge / alloys on it when I was sat on a pub bench supping a nice pint of london pride? :D
