Trying to love my Diesel

Featured Replies

I love my Superb but I am struggling to love the 1.9Tdi that powers it. It seems that it's purely economics, i.e. the price of fuel, that have led me to it. It's very economical which is great but the engine noise is doing my head in and the performance, though great for a Diesel, is not thrilling. Obviously everything is a compromise but this leads me to two questions. What are the tuning options for the 1.9Tdi with a rough price guide and secondly does anyone out there recommend the 2.8 petrol or is it just too thirsty? Can the 2.8 be converted to LPG or is that not recommended anyway. If it wasn't down to consumption, which engine would you have?

I would always have petrol if i could afford it - as it is both myself and my wife drive diesels. I had a custom map on my Fabia which is an option.

Agreed a custom remap is the way to go, our Octy 110 is now giving just over 160 bhp curtosy of a Jabba Custom map & yet still gives 55 mpg on a run (cruise set on 85)

For Noise contact Steve at http://www.noisekiller.co.uk/index.php He does a few noise reducing items for Diesels

Do you have the PD100 or PD130?

PD 130 with a manual gearbox. The problem is that on a cold morning taking the kids to school and opening the windows to get a better rear view in the door mirrors, there is no escaping that racket of an engine. It is my first diesel so it could be just a case of getting used to it, however if I could get some serious life out of it I reckon I could overcome the niggles.

I drove diesels since I passed my test because I was always borrowing a family car or a hand-me-down. The family always had diesels at that time. When I came to buy my own car, I chose petrol, just to get away from the cold startup noise, as you say, with the window down, it doesn't make it very enjoyable, so can understand completely what you are saying.

While I had my Octavia (1.8T) I really appreciated the quiet purr at all times, some people aren't bothered by it though.

As above ref remap & noise.

if you have been driving petrols for a long time, then the diesel engine will take some getting used to. Generally once the engine is warm, the noise is no where near as loud.

How many miles as it done? As they take a few thousand to loosen up.

Agree on noise, but at that economy and performance for what is effectively a 'tank' I lurve it. 2.5v6 TDi is a good compromise between noise, economy and performance, but hits the wallet company car tax wise. :)

I have a 2.8 Auto Superb and find it very economical for a 2.8 litre unit. I think its a great drive and have the luxury of using it all for pleasure not work miles, with frequent Euro trips.

When up to temp without too much effort 30+ is possible without town stop start use. Use in town anm its 25 ish.

I have driven the 130 in the Superb many times and to me its not refinned/sound proofed enough for what supposed to be a luxurios car - I hate the vibration that can be felt on teh clutch pedal. Auto express a couple of weeks ago made the same comment, they said its quieter in the Fabia than the Superb.

Personally I have no issues at all with the noise the engine makes, love the diesel noise!!! in any shape or form!

Also like it when the turbo is spinning!

If it's a PD130, would the sound proofing kit from the Ibiza fit? I have one on order for my Furby having read on the forum that at idle speeds and town running it really cut's the noise down.

A superb is a big chunk of metal, but I once had a Passat TDi 110 in sport trim and that was spritely enough. A remap would certainly give you the extra ponies you seek

Try the 2.5 V6 diesel - its sounds and goes much better IMHO. And can still get 40mpg.

To answer an earlier question, it's done approx 5,000 miles. I must admit the mpg figures for the 2.8 weren't enticing. I don't want to think about every mile and what it is costing me in gas. That's probably less fun than the noise I am suffering! I've heard comment about the 2.5Tdi actually being noisier than the 1.9, although a lot smoother, any truth in that?

the insurance, the road fund license and the 55 mpg make the sound of my engine dissapear.......and it goes very well now :D

Possibly, whe the mag "diesel car driver" tested the Superb 2.5 TDI they thought it was noisey, havn't driven one to comment, would love to to see how it compares to the 2.8 myself.

Since the unit you have is the same one in the Fabia vRS, wouldn't you just require the same remap to about 180bhp?

And the 2.8 Superb...very nice :) And for the size of the engine plus the tank, it's economical enough.

I drive a 2.5. It is smooth and I can hear it, but being a V6 its a nicer noise, especially when you put your foot down. And its plenty quick enough for me. Although the 2.8 petrol has got more horses and is faster at 0 to 60 than the diesel its got less torque than the 2.5. What I like most about the 2.5 is its "grunt" that gives you a real kick when you most need it, when you are doing 40 and want to overtake a truck.

Would certainly watch the age of your car if considering a remap, especially if you are interested in keeping your warranty intact.

I've had the 2.5 V6 TDi for a couple of weeks and it's as smooth as most Audi's and VW's that I've driven before. Slightly noisier in the morning than my 1.6 octy was, but the soundproofing deals with that unless you put the windows down.

Try wiping your windaes before you get in, then you won't need to put them down....

Performance and cruising comfort in the 2.5 V6 is well worth it.

So far Avg'd 30 mph, and 38 mpg, but mainly town driving, on recent trip cross country got 42mpg, despite high speed.

Only concern is the slightly loud reversing sensor when you put it in reverse. Is there anyway of lowering the volume of the initial BEEEEEP?

I run a 2.8 manual, and just love it, its very smooth, very quiet, revs beautifully, and I think it really suits the car.

I do a lot of very short journeys round town, with a cold engine, but still average 28mpg, mix in a bit of out-of-town and it goes up to 30, and driven unnaturally gently, it can hit 35mpg, but overall, 30 seems like a natural figure for the car.

Performance is pretty good, though once it reaches about 140, the acceleration seems a bit gentle. It has almost exactly the same performance figures as a classic E-type Jag.

If you're buying new, then the 2.8 doesn't make much economic sense, but I got mine secondhand, and the big petrol engine was about

Where did you pick this up, and what did it cost you??

Steve

There was no question when I bought my 54 reg Superb, it had to be the 2.8 and I haven't regretted it for a moment even as the price of petrol seems to rise everyday.

[/quote']

It's not quite the same engine as the VRS as it's mounted longitudinally rather than transversely in the car and has a 5 speed gearbox rather than a six.

Still , a remap will get you close to 180bhp without much trouble :)
