Intermmitent fault, missing at 50mph

Featured Replies

Hi,

Previously posted for help to solve an intermittent fault when driving at about 50mph the car would miss and temporarily lose power.

Thanks for all the help form you guys on this forum I bought VCDS-lite, learned to use it and replaced the EGR valve and now a week later the car is running very well - touch wood.

Apart from the blow out today on my way home from work, a nail/screw must have been in the tyre and it chose to come out on the bypass. Now fixed, new tyre.

See what software version the engine ECU has via VCDS if you can.  One of the things I remember reading when I has trouble with ours was that you should have a certain range of versions to ensure safe operation of the new EGR valve, versions 5323-5329 according to this document (unless yours is a BME-code engine in which case you want 7000/7001).

Thanks for the heads up. Now that I think I've got it sorted I'd hate it to fail due to my ignorance of this point. At £107 for new unit it would be a costly mistake.

Will hook up the VCDS tonight and have a look.

Where do I find version of ECU?  I hope that it will be obvious, just asking and if you remember it might save a lot of time searching.

More importantly, what do I do if the ECU has not got the soft ware version quoted on the fact sheet you sent.  I have AZQ engine.

Also puzzled, motor factor always asks for Reg. No. and although not chassis no., this should lead to correct part.  So are there several EGR's and you need to match the ECU to the EGR?

The software version that was programmed into the ECU at manufacture is written on the outside of the ECU case, just after "Benzin Simos 3PE" this one is 5329, as is ours. Yours being an earlier car, I wouldn't be surprised if that is a lower number.  I believe VCDS outputs the software version number when you connect to the ECU. This will be the version currently in the ECU, rather than the one that Skoda put in at the factory. May be the same, maybe not.

Dealer would be the only place to get an update, if necessary, I think. No idea what they would charge, but I doubt it would be free!

I think you'd buy the same EGR valve whatever the software version you have, but it will work for longer if the software is updated to one of the versions mentioned, if it isn't already at one of those.

Depending on the future plans for the car, and the price quoted for an update if recommended, it may or may not be worth doing.

Just a thought.

The one on eBay is £16, and has the correct code.  Could I buy this and would it be a straight swap over or would I have to do some "software" stuff?
