Clutch gone

Featured Replies

My just over three old 44k car was in for some warranty work. Received a phone call to say the car is not recommended to be driven as there is a problem, clutch suspected.

I have never had a clutch go in 18 years with cars that were doing 40k a year and being driven hard. This car has been driven by me like a Sunday school teacher.

The gear box is being taken out tomorrow, we will see.

I have a straight manual so the only thing on mine if the clutch was "going" would be it slipping not making a noise like a rattley dry bearing getting louder. Would it?

My clutch on a 4x4 was replaced due to a rattle sound, it was thought that as it's a DMF and made up from many parts including springs and plates, I bowed to their knowledge and had it replaced at a cost of £1200, cost extra as it's a 4x4, I saw the clutch and it was worn but imagine my surprise when the rattle hadn't gone! bloody turned out to be the starter motor not properly disengaging and catching the clutch ring gear teeth! Another £200!

I do have faith in my dealer to do the right thing.

Yes, I agree, rattling suggests a "failure" of some sort to me, not wear. I have a slight deep rattle from the transmission somewhere on the upshift, so I need to get it to the dealer to get it reviewed before the warranty ends...

Car back today all fixed.

The clutch has loads of life left in many multiples of the 44k miles it had done. The pressure plate on the other was totally bu>>ered. It had slipped from the casing and come away from around the splines, very lucky it did happen after I parked up and only became apparent when the mechanic took it into the workshop. The invoice, NOT mine came to nearly £600 just for the parts.

Can't fault Capitol Skoda from Newport, South Wales enough.

Coincidence? could it have been ragged during a test drive?

Its driven for 44k and goes during the time its at the stealer! come on.

I might be tempted to think the same if I did not know the individuals as I do but although it is rare very rare for me I do trust my dealer and that is probably the first time I have ever said/thought that.

Yeah, I agree; it could've just been coincidental it failed in their possession, but they sorted it, that's the important thing. Like you, I also have great trust in the dealer I use too. First took our MKI there as they were the closest to my office. That was 8 years ago, and they've been fantastic during that time, so much so that I still do the 115 mile round trip for servicing/repairs etc. :)
