Trackers

Featured Replies

I am due to pick my new car up tomorrow, and have would like o try and get a tracker fitted on it at some point (after what happened last time).

I have been looking at the Meta GPA800 system, does anyone have any experience with these?

My only concern is that as these work on GPS, don't they require line of sight to to sattelite? Is this a safe way of tracking your vehicle or is there other prefered methods, eg GPRS from mobile phones?

Sorry if this is a simple question, but I have no idea how these system work.

Cheers for any advice that can be given.

Give your insurance company a call and see what discounts they offer for tracking devices as that might help make your mind up.

When I enquired about getting on installed on the Furby vRS they said no discount so I didn't get it done.

My insurance company have said that it makes no difference to the policy if one is fitted.

Just want to protect no claims bonus and get some peace of mind after what happened last time.

If someone nicked my motor I'm not sure I'd want it back after some scumo had been in it. It would just feel soiled. But I would like then court and bought to justice (well 25 hours community service anyway) :thumbdwn:

True, not too sure if I would want mine back either. But if a sticker o the window of the car prevents them from breaking in to the house while you and your family are asleep, i'm thinking it might be a chance thats worth the money.

Also, if another car is stolen off me, i will loose my no claims bonus and I will have to been happy driving unimpressed slow cars for a couple of years, not appealing!!!

If its the deterrant your after just get a scary looking 'tracker' sticker made up pop it in the car and save yourself a bundle of cash  (not sure if anyone ever actually pays any attention to stickers though)

Actually I think i'm missing the point here, these scum can't even read!!!!

If you have a tracker they dont put a sticker in the car. they work best if the thief dosent realise hes being tracked, If youve got a sticker they might tear the car apart trying to find it.

If you intend to mod your car its well worth having, remember that the Insurance co only ever pay out up to the market value, if you have a

I had tracker monitor in my scoob which got nicked (car jacked). I called the police they picked me up. I informed them of the tracker and they said the helicopter with the tracking equipment was out of action! IMO waste of money. You are much better buying the Cliiford Blackjax anti hijack system. Now thats what got my scoob returned with no damage. Glad I traded it in for a Fabia vrs though!

Had a basic passive Tracker in my Scoob as it was required by the insurance company. I suspect most people who nick cars now suspect they have a tracker and can remove them quickly (there's not that many places to hide one!). Also had a Clifford Concept 500 (with Blackjax) fitted, which imho was much better value for money.... Luckily, we didn't get to test either of them in action :D

Would recommend not having any stickers giving clues as to what security devices are installed (or pretending to be installed) as it'll just ensure they bring the right tools for the job.....

Oh, and don't expect any discounts from the insurance company for security devices!!!!

I had Tracker Monitor in my E36 M3 and I purchased a TrakM8 for my last M3.

I liked the TrakM8 as it also gave me info like Journey reporting, best 0-62 time, etc.. It just texts your mobile phone when your car moves, instantly and it's thatcham Q approved.

It was funny when I caught the dealer speeding in my car while it was in for a service!! Should have seen thier faces when I showed them the proof on my mobile!! :finger:

being relasitic about things what ever you have on the car as security, if someone really wants the car then they are going to steel it.

I have looked at trackers and got no discount offer from the insureance company and also was advised by someone that a GPS one could have it's signal blocked. I have also looked at high spec car alarms and again no discount and people dont bother with the alarm except to curse it

the best thing I have found is to do the following

park in a sensible place

Make sure that there is nothing on view

lock the steering column lock

have a full steering wheel lock that covers at least 1/2 the wheel

always leave a car in gear

basicly make it a difficult target with a big deterrant

If you want a Tracker then the RAC TracStar system gets lots of good reports.

Has won a number of industry awards this year.
