Fabia MkII Cylinder Misfire (Coil Pack!)

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Have a Fabia MkII 1.6 (105hp - '09 reg.) - noticed lumpy idle and engine vibrations - stuck a VCDS on it and came up with "Misfire on Cylinder 2".

Following previous posts on this forum, I checked all the sparks (maintenance items - car had a full service recently with 'engine cleaner additive' added) which seemed brand new stock Bosch VW ones. Switched coil packs between the two middle spark plugs (assume at least one of them was cylinder 2...) - ran the car for a day - re-checked with VCDS and sure enough, code came up with "Misfire on Cylinder 3"!

Two questions:

- On a Fabia MkII, how do you number the cyllinders (when you are looking at the engine from the front) - is it Left->Right 1..2..3..4?

- I've seen a decent looking replacement (Bosch: http://www.micksgarage.com/search.aspx?fffBrand=Tesla~~~Quinton%20Hazell~~~Nordic~~~Bosch&fffDepartment=Ignition%2BCoils&fffMake=skoda&fffBasemodel=skoda%20fabia&fffModelDescription=fabia%202006%20onwards&ffftd_car=1.6&fffBHP=105 ) but should I replace all 4 ignition coil packs, or just replace this one (which would mean the 3 other coil packs were running stock ignition coils)? Heard that some models' stock coil packs were dodgy - should I just replace all with this bosch version (for ~£140 from Mick's Garage)?

Thanks in advance,

You're right with the cylinder numbering.

I personally would just replace the one that appears to have a fault.

As wino said you are correct with the numbering.  Before replacing any coil packs, check your spark plugs first.   I had this problem re-occurring kept thinking it was the coil packs, swapped them all round and bought new kept coming up with #3.  I bought new spark plugs and it solved the problem.  But if you do buy new either spark plugs or coil packs then swap them all not just one.

Thanks Wino and Naths.

The first thing I did was to check all the spark plugs, as it was in recently for a major service with a Skoda garage and I wanted to make sure they hadn't jipped me - all the plugs look new (mildly oxidised, but then it has done ~200 miles since they were fitted) and they're the stock VW Bosch ones. Since I swapped the coil packs between cylinder 2 and 3, the fault has moved from 2 to 3, so I'm pretty sure it's the coil pack.

Have heard mixed opinions about whether to change all coil packs - I'm going down to Halfords later to see their Bosch Coil Pack price and make a decision then. I guess I could keep the old stock ones that appear to still work, as spares.

I guess it depends whether they all go roughly at the same time - I guess the wear on the ignition coils will be fairly similar over their lifetime, and so I may expect another coil to go at some point...

Before you do, I recall that I only swapped the ones that i thought we're knackered so basically I've just told bulls**t :D, save your cash and only buy the one.

Thanks Naths - yeah, will probably just get the one, but it'll be a Bosch part for sure! Halfords seem to be roughly the same price as online, and I need the part now as my missus needs to drive the car and I don't want to knacker the cat or O2 sensor - it's already done ~100miles with a misfire!

Mine had it for months, and was driving with it, it was alright, on the odd occasion when i really needed to boot it, it went into limp mode.
