Breakdown cover: Recommendations?

Featured Replies

So I've just realised my breakdown cover finished a month or so ago.

I did the usual shopping around and found some good deals - although a lot of them rely on "cashback" from either Quidco or Topcashback.

Personally Quidco have always paid up, nut it's always a risk.

I got a quote from Green Flag. Their Recovery Plus for £60.43 for the year. So no cashbask worries, just that amount.

Anyone got any experience with Green Flag? Good/Bad?

I'm in the same boat, having been told by the salesman at purchase time that my extended warranty included an extension of Skoda Assist too** I got the letter in May asking me to renew membership :( It wasn't a bad deal, with the cheapest being £145 for the two years, but I've no need for European cover and I'm not bothered about home start. I didn't renew*** cover for my Octavia after the three years AA cover expired and it turned out to be money well saved.

I wondered about Green Flag but as I was last with them in 1990 my experience isn't much use! looks like I can get basic cover for £38 with them, or £27 with Swiftcover - the only ones I've heard of in the comparison list that came up.

**I asked if breakdown was continued and he said yes - nothing in writing unfortunately.

*** Tried to renew over the phone (no online option back then) one lunchtime but after 40 minutes my call, whilst still being 'important to them' was still in a queue so I gave up and did without.

Another option to consider is not renewing.

If and when you require the assistance of a roadside mechanic make the call and pay the higher one-off charge.

Chances are it'll be a lot more than £60 but if you drive a modern vehicle so that the likelihood of a breakdown is slim then it can work out cheaper.

When driving my 10 year old Peugeot I had cover and used it once in more than 5 years. Now I drive a newer car I'm taking my chances without cover.

It is after all a type of 'insurance'. A lot of companies use scare tactics to say that they won't let you join at the side of the road, however in my experience both the RAC and AA will.

Autoaid - £41 for self and spouse, any vehicle, home & roadside & recovery as far as I remember.

Broke down twice in first year - towed in and fixed, no quibble about money at all.

Is your car insurance due for renewal soon, as some insurance companies seem to offer built in recovery stupidly cheap. I have just been quoted £235 fully comp and with full European breakdown cover. Even if you have already renewed your insurance, it may be worth contacting them and compare the price they charge against other companies.

I was with the same provider last year when I had to call out recovery due to a random electrical fault (lights and radio would work, but as soon as I tried to turn the ignition, all the lights on the dash flickered on and off, and there was the sound of 'arcing' in the engine bay), and they sent out Green Flag. I was initially quoted a waiting time of 8 hours as it was the Tuesday after the Easter Bank Holiday, which is apparently the busiest day for call outs! They arrived within two hours and sorted the issue out in about 10 minutes. First time I have used a recovery company since buying my Scout in 2010, but on that, admittedly limited experience, I would use Green Flag again.

I hadn't thought about my insurance.

I'm with Avivia and I just went and got a quote to add breakdown - £47. With the RAC and gave me all the things the Green Flag policy did.

Was about to click OK when it suddenly dawned on me. That was £47 to add breakdown until my insurance renewal - In january.

So £47 for six months of breakdown, or £60 direct with Green Flag for a year. So looks like Green Flag at the moment.

Have a look at Flux cover, from Adrian Flux. Home start/ breakdown &recovery all included ,for less than most folks.

Have only tried the AA in anger (came with the car) can't complain service was very good.

Look for deals though, especially on the cash back websites or through Tesco vouchers. You can sometimes get cover for literally pennies.

+1 for AutoAid. Was with the AA but annual premium hikes got tedious!
