Buying a vw is it considered a no no taking my vcds

Featured Replies

Its not the checking that would concern me, its the person operating the equipment.

Send an AA guy round with all his experience, qualifications and know how and id be more than pleased to let him plug it in... But not just some randomer off the street that may not know his arse from his elbow, i wouldnt want him fiddlin lol

I refuse on my cars to let others do it but I'll quite happily grab my diagnostic unit and plug it in to show them.

I wouldn't have an issue with that; the point is to demonstrate what codes do or do not exist rather than to fvck up your car.

To be honest if an issue exists most will wipe the codes just before buyer arrives in the hope it'll take a drive cycle to pop up again. I've done the same with an airbag fault just before going into an MOT centre. (Fault started night before so no other option really)

Your prepared to let any tom **** or harry test drive your car but not do a diagnostic check?

Normally cars are advertised with the statement "Any inspection welcome"

So why ask for permission in the first place?

Nope, I just drive it.

I would never buy a car I couldn't drive before handing the cash over.

Ive never had any trouble selling cars or bikes. People are understanding.

I sold my last bike, the guy handed over the cash etc, watched him ride away and he dropped the clutch, held on for his life n nearly crashed into the back of a neighbours car.

Now why would i want someone like that driving/riding my stuff.

Nightmare in the making.

When I was selling my Polo, I offered to scan the car for the buyer as I knew there was nothing to hide.

I'd not buy a car I couldn't test drive (there's more fish in the sea...), and if they wouldn't entertain the idea at all of me scanning it, I'd walk unless it was something very, very special.

I used to be on a USian film and politics site with similar nannyware; cue much discussion of the director Alfred Hitchpenis, the Democrat Penis Chaney...

I have walked away from a car when the dealer refused to let me scan the car.... it later turned out to be clocked.... BIG time!

I always ask them if they know what VCDS is and show the owner what I am doing, explaining as I go along, bits like “it will go bong in a second... it’s just doing its check on each controller” puts most of them at ease as it proves I know what I am doing and not about to brick their car.

If one of you lot wanted to scan mine with the view of buying that Id have no problem as I know the people on this site that have VCDS know what they're doing, not sure about anyone else. Maybe reluctantly but I'd be keeping a close eye on them.

Ok quick update on the thread

Guy had no issues with vcds plug in no fault found

Re mot it had 3 month mot left and he took to be re mot and it failed on one tyre plus an advisory on corrosion on rear discs (car had been stood for 3 months)

In for retest tomorrow (at a Toyota dealer strangely) and should be picking it up Sunday

Booked in Monday for cambelt and service for mynown piece of mind

I was nervous of asking him but thought stuff it its my money if he doesn't want me too then move on to the next one turns out he was more interested in seeing it in action

Depends who it is still though

I mean. The most useless person youve ever met could join the forum for free and stupidly splash £300 (think its about that?) on vcds.

Doesnt mean they know anything.

I could buy it tomorrow. Ive no idea how to use it.

Im not the stupidest person youve ever met though. Mainly cos you havent met me... Hahaa

I am happy for someone to run diagnostics provided I can see their screen. In terms of trusting the seller:

1. Some people aren't trustworthy

2. Even if they are a quick scan wouldn't go amiss.
