TSI or TFSI

Featured Replies

Hello, newbie here.

I'm thinking about replacing my creaking old Focus. Top of my short list is a 1.8 Octavia. Most of them seem to be the 1.8 TSI but I've seen one or two described as TFSI.

I wondered what the difference is. Can anyone enlighten me?

I may also consider a 1.9 Diesel. The general advice I've seen is to only buy a Diesel if your mileage justifies it. At the moment I'm doing about 150 a week. Does the 1.9 2009 onwards have a DPF and are there any other potential problems with this engine, DMF etc?

Thanks

I guess that DPFs can be found on Vag cars from 2005 or so. It should have DMF as well so I'd better choose petrol. Your annual mileage isn't that high.

If you buy a Mk2 octy with a 1.8 turbo then it's a TSI.

I'm assuming if they say it's a 1.8tfsi then maybe it's the MK1 with the old 5-valver?

IMO, the best (as in most reliable) of the 1.8tsi is the 2007/2008 with the Gen1 BZB engine.  They use a bit more fuel but don't appear to have the timing chain tensioner  issues of the mid-2008 onwards Gen2 engines.

The one I've seen is a 2009, so probably wrongly described as TFSI by the dealer

probably.  I think the 2.0 was still the belt drive TFSI in 2009 so the dealer probably hasn't a clue
