Bottle Jack

Featured Replies

I'm about to order a bottle jack and was wondering what would be a good weight rating to get.

Is a 2 ton rating capable of handling most cars? Not thinking of things like Merc S class but Octy and perhaps up to BMW 5 series.

TIA.

2 ton should be sufficient.

That's what my trolley jack is rated at.

You'll find very few places you can get a bottle jack under a modern car. Did you mean trolley? Even then, make sure to get one with a low "entry point". 2 ton is good.

No...I did mean a bottle jack which I can keep in the boot of the run around as it doesn't have a jack...do want to get a trolley jack as well though

Something like this? :D Had to find one for the Disco as I had the opposite problem to Nick and couldn't find a trolley jack tall enough to reach the jacking points!!!

I was looking a Machine Mart ...2 ton bottle jack for approx

You can get a nice 2-ton trolley jack in its own plastic case for a few quid..IMHO much better to use a trolley then a bottle as when you jack up the car the trolley will adjust itself to take into account the tilting motion of the car as it rises...In my experience bottle jacks are not a good idea unless the ground is dead flat and rock hard.

You'll struggle to find 155 mm of clearance under the car especially when you break down in a fully laden car on the motorway, with a flat tyre...

Whilst I agree with what you are saying....I wonder do I really want to be carrying a trolley jack in the back on the car....my run-around doesn't have a jack hence the bottle jack.

Perhaps I should go to the scrappy and see if they have one....not sure how much these things costs at a dealer though.

I gave up using bottle jacks years ago because they lack stability if used on anything other than a hard level surface plus the support (contact) area is small and prone to cause damage. I find the supplied car jack is plenty good enough for wheel changing although it does need to be placed on a small piece of thick plywood or similar to ensure that it doesn't 'dig in' if used on a soft surface. The trolley jack I bought a few years ago has proved to be very versatile but does need to be used in conjunction with sturdy axle stands.

As Chris can probably confirm from the problems we had with his car, the best use I have found for my bottle jack to push up underneath track rod ends and wedge them in whilst undoing the top nut.

Would you even notice it in the back of an Octy? :)

It's not for the Octy.:) That said it will fit in the run-around quite easily....might get some strange looks pulling out a trolley jack on side of road though.

Only admiring ones

I used to keep mine in the boot until Mini-me and associated carp appeared on the scene. I must admit to getting funny looks at work when changing the tyres around on my old 306......nearly lifted the whole car off the ground in about 10 seconds

i just don't trust those bent bits of tin that manufacturers call jacks..not since a rover one disintergrated on me mid-jacking...good job I always keep the spare tyre under the car when swapping over...
