Air con not working properly

Featured Replies

Problem is no cold air.

Climatronic works fine.

Air con clutch engages as there is a slight engine note change when turing the air con on.

Rad fans start and stop when the air con is turned on and off.

With the engine running and the air con on at normal there are no noises.

Then either with the air con off or after pressing the econ button a low pitch whine is heard which has a kind of grinding quality to it.

Halls electrical checked the air con and said the fault is either the compressor or electrics associated with it.

They said there is gas in the system so not a leak.

I am not sure what to check for the electrical fault.

35k miles ago the air con clutch was repaired and the alternator was replaced.

Any suggestions folks?

Try a self diagnostic...

Press and hold the two left and right most buttons before turning the key, will say it's in diagnostic on the screen. It'll cycle through everything and then give you a code displayed which may or may not point to problems.

44400 is generally the 'everything's fine' code, anything else will indicate a problem.

Should have said, I have done that.

There aren't any errors I can see.

Don't think it is a climatronic issue.

Get the whining noise on starting for 5-10 seconds as well with the air con on.

Measured 9V to the compressor.

Applied 12V from the battery and no difference.

The compressor has a moaning grinding sound to it on starting the engine which disappears after five seconds with the air con on or is permanent with the air con off.

So it sounds like the clutch is not disengaging due to lack of voltage and it has seized in position.

No idea how to remove the clutch without removing the compressor.

VCDS lite has no fault codes showing on engine or HVAC.

The fan controller has ten pins from what I can see.

But not sure how to release the connector.

Any ideas for fault finding 9V issue?

Had a problem on mine and there is a large positive feed to the controller which was sort of fried, I was getting 6v or so at the compressor so wasnt kicking in,  perhaps its a similar prob with yours?

So the compressor gets 9V, which is insufficient to actuate the clutch. So the clutch burns out?

I removed the serpentine belt to investigate.

There is play in the ribbed pulley bearing.

The pulley turns very easily but the centre nut does not turn with it.

The armature plate rotates independently of the pulley and/or the centre nut.

With a spanner,  the centre nut will turn, there is some resistance.

With the engine on the centre nut turns slowly with the air con on or off.

Thinking out loud to determine the problem. A clutch gone but not sure if the compressor has gone.

The shaft is turning slowly all the time so some action and lubrication.

No idea where to look for the electrical fault.

Suggestions are the rad control module under the battery, but I can't remove the connectors nor can I find a wiring diagram.

The fans work ok, slow and fast, the climatronic diagnosis shows no faults. fuses are ok.
