Oct II sidelight bulb

Featured Replies

Changed the headlight bulbs the other day and was thinking "where's the sidelight in there?"   Sidelights work ok just now, but if bulb blows is it a PITA to replace?

Thanks for any info.

They are behind the plastic cover. On the side. Have 2 wires going into a black plug. They pull out with some long nose pliers on the 2 sprung clips

I practice the removal and re fit of all bulbs whenever I have a new vehicle as well as looking for the fuses and towing points and the like so that if needed I don't get flustered.

I'm assuming they're not actually visible and you just have to "feel around" with the pliers?

are we talking face lift or pre face lift?

Pre face lift its obvious. There is a black bit of plastic with 2 wires. You twist this and pull it out and the bulb is there

Pre face lift.....can you see the "black bit of plastic" or is it only after it's out that you know it's a black bit of plastic?!

One bit of advice -- the sidelights are a real PITA to take out, and it is far easier to remove the headlight completely and change the bulb with the headlight out of the car.

Squeezing the two lugs needs a fair bit of fiddling around with long nose pliers, and they are a tight fit. To help next time, once the sidelight bulb (in its holder) is removed, snap the two lugs clean off. Yes, you did read this right -- remove them. When the bulb holder is replaced in the headlight unit it is such a tight fit that the retaining lugs are certainly not needed to hold it in place, and not having the lugs there makes is SO much easier to remove next time.

Removing the lugs on both sidelights in both cars was one of the first jobs I did when I got the car, along with lubricating and greasing the headlight slide mechanisms whilst the headlights were out.

Hope this helps

The headlight is designed to be removed when changing bulbs. You can change the main beam without removing the unit but the idea is to spend 30 seconds removong the unit to make your life a whole lot easier

  • 2 months later...

My sidelight decided to stop working on the offside. Was fine this morning but has gone. Tried one I had in the car, but that doesn't work either. Have asked the wife to pick me up some new ones to try before it comes down to wiring and then a more serious issue.

I hope so, they were in bubble wrap, but you never know. Go down the new route before I then have to decide what to do.

It has not long passed its MOT, but I don't fancy driving around with a bulb warning light on the dash (tape might be my friend ;) )

Failing that DRLs but not if I can help it
