Is my car really a snake?

Featured Replies

I haven't found an answer to this so sorry if it has been covered.

Aircon. Mine seems to make a hissing noise while it is running and when I turn it off I can hear it releasing 'pressure' for want of a better word. The other day I turned the engine off after running with the aircon on, and it hissed for a good few minutes. The cool setting still blasts out ice cold air noticeably different to the cool setting using the blowers alone and there is no odour from the system. Is this normal?

The car is in for the track rod ends on Friday so if I have an idea something is wrong I can speak up then.

Thanks, Jon.

Theres a reciever/drier for the ac its probably just equalizing after turning it all off but not when running maybe worth getting the gas charge checked

Ive heard it on mine.. If i really listen carefully whilst stationary. Can noticably hear it disapear when i turn the air con off.

I dont think theres anything wrong though. Just the AC componants working as they should i thought.

What years your car mate?

It's a 2013, never been recharged since new. Never had it 'spring cleaned' either. It does seem to be pretty loud, I can certainly hear it above the fan at any speed setting.

Mine does exact same I can only hear it on fan speed 1 tho but turn a.c. off and still there for a few seconds think it's just there type of system

Thanks fellas, always worth asking these things.

At this age would anyone say a re-gas is essential? Keeping in mind it seems to function perfectly.

Shouldn't need a regas yet, the air con system as a whole is quote loud, as long as it's cold and it isn't causing running problems I wouldn't worry

Mines a 2013 too and also never been recharged.

I wouldnt say it needs recharging aslong as its functioning properly and cold.

I can only hear mine if im stopped, radio off and on fan speed 1. (Althoigh i rarely use any other fan speed to notice).

Cool, money saved!

As the hissing sound becomes noticeable then this is a sign that gas pressure is low. Not low enough to not cool but i would certainly have the pressure checked.

My local dealer tested my Air Con by sticking a Thermometer down one of the centre vents on the dash. Turn the Air con on and see how cold the thermometer reads.

There are some set value's I think,  takes about 10 minutes. Cheaper than a regas as the dealer didn't make a charge

jonro, if it's that loud, you are getting low on gas. It shouldn't be making that much noise. I'd have a word with the techs at your dealership while it's still under warranty. My bro in law's 7 month old Golf GTI has just started doing the same thing. His compressor is leaking! Expensive if not under warranty, ouch!

Thanks estate man, I will get them to look at it tomorrow.

Re-gas might not be a warranty issue as its recommended every two years. Failed components could be though. The best thing to do if you have air-con is to use it regular, even in winter, so as to stop the seals drying out and leaking. A re-gas at a dealer is not that expensive now so check, prior to letting others loose on the car. They also sometimes offer a lower price if done in conjunction with a service.

make sure anyone does a proper re-gas, as some just connect an aerosol to the car and pump extra gas in, charging nearly as much as a proper emptying, pressure testing and refilling with the proper gas and lubricant, often with a dye, to spot future leaking.

I find myself using it quite alot all year round anyway tbh.

Its a god send in summer, and soon sorts steaming up in winter

Not sure i could live without now haha.
