IE 11 won't install

Featured Replies

I normally use Chrome (or Chromium) but I wanted to watch Sky Sports on the laptop in the kitchen, and apparently (according to Sky) Chrome no longer supports the Sky player.

Because I don't normally use IE, it's still on IE8. I've tried to download IE11 several times but it fails with an unspecified error. This laptop meets the minimum specs required for IE11. I have admin rights, and I've downloaded the correct version, for Win 7 Sp1 32-bit.

Could the problem be that you can't go straight from IE8 to IE11? The other annoying thing is that you can't download IE10 from Microsoft anymore, and I am wary of downloading it from any third party sources.

Any ideas?

Firefox?

Isn't IE11 windows 8 only?

Twice I've tried it on Windows 7 x64 machines and it messed them up twice.

Back on IE10 now, but only for non-Chrome sites.

Sky Go site says IE9 up or Firefox or Safari

I'll give Safari a try too thanks.

Strange. Have you tried to upgrade it via Windows Update?

I've got IE11 on my Win 7 x64 setup. Never use it though.

Yes I've tried via Windows update and direct from the website. I've even updated the windows update tool.

However I've got IE10 running now thanks to the link provided by djswivel

Now you have 10, will 11 install?

What is the error logged in event viewer?

no it still fails. The error is 9C59. Unknown error.

I love these "unknown errors"......surely something specific must have happened to get an error code.

Brilliant link RainbowFire. Top man, I'll make a note of it in case I have any future problems.

Give Safari a try....................

Probably the best browser you'll ever use.

If it was lager, it would be Heineken.   :D

The link doesn't work, and I've also read that Apple stopped supporting that browser years ago?

I've got  IE 11 on a Win7 64 bit installation. Might be a 32bit Ie not too sure. I don't use it much.

Are Sky switching to Silverlight?

Seems a bit crazy considering even MS don't really support it  any more and they're going to drop it for Win10

[edit] It's dropped for the Edge browser, Ie11 will still be there.

From their website http://help.sky.com/articles/sky-go-supported-devices

Google Chrome no longer supports the Microsoft Silverlight plug-in for Windows PCs and laptops. So, if you use Google Chrome to enjoy entertainment from Sky Go you need to switch to a different web browser to continue watching. You should have Internet Explorer installed as your default web browser, if not, use the links below to download the latest version:

Incorrect!

You can for a while longer use Chrome to watch sites which use the Silverlight plug in and here's how you do it.

1. Open a new tab.

2. In the address bar type: chrome://flags/#enable-npapi (C&P this into the address bar for speed)

3. Close chrome & restart it, on the webpage that you wanted.

To prove a point try it on this site.

railcam.nl

Do the above, then click on Railcam 1 or 2, if you've done it right you should see the live video feed of a level crossing of the Nederlandse Spoorwegen line to Venlo at a place called Mierlo-Hout.

Please Note: This will only work upto Update 45, after that this will probably not work.

Just a thought have you checked in Windows control panel whether it's available, but just not selected?

Control Panel ► Programs ► Programs & Features ► Turn Windows Features On or Off (Left hand side, with Shield).

See if it's in there.

Give Safari a try....................

Please do not suggest people use Safari on Windows machines.

It hasn't been updated for 3 years (May 2012) so will be open to many security exploits, the windows version is 5.1.7 compared to the latest 8.0.7.

If you have got this installed, please uninstall it and move to a browser that is currently updated such as IE, Firefox or Chrome.

As for the original problem, it's to do with a bad windows update iirc. I hit it recently on a new install and ended up formatting the machine and then installing the updates in a very specific order.
