Grrr, tyre fitter damaged my alloys!

Featured Replies

Had a second set of Trifid's I found on eBay for the Superb refurbed the other week, the originals will be my new winter wheels.

Took them to my local and trusted tyre fitter to have the tyres on the car swapped over to the newly refurbed rims and the original rims put in the boot until they are ready to have a new set of winters fitted later in the year.

It's always hard to check them in the fitting bay, greasy finger prints and that paste they put around the rim to help ease the tyre back on.

When I got home I noticed that on one of the original alloys consistent damage at the same point on each spoke. I know the alloys were (almost) perfect before it went in.

They've shut now for the rest of the weekend but I'll shot them a quick email.

They even managed to scratch one of the new alloys. Not happy.

The ones I use I can watch them do it and I keep my cleaning gear in my car and clean them after to check for marks, works both ways as I reccomend them to everyone local to say these guys take the utmost care, hope you get it sorted to your liking

Thanks, I've used these guys for years without issue. Depending on how this is resolved will determine if I return.

Ouch. I'm sure as a regular they will sort you out

Good on you Gizmo for sticking to your guns and seeing it through to the end.

It was certainly a long drawn out process but yes well worth going the whole hog... they paid all the court fees, bailiff costs plus my loss of earnings for a day so I could attend court.

Urgh ffs :(. Sorry to see that

Hope all works out well!

To be fair the manager rang me at 07:45 this morning after I sent the email on Saturday afternoon.

He promised me that it will be sorted and to drop the wheel off with them as soon as I can.

We are heading in the right direction!

I fully clean and strip back my alloys for new tyres and i also photograph all 4 wheels face and back and make them aware of any damage and get them to mark it down on a walk round sheet.

Needless to say no damage here.

Yeah, I'm too trusting, I'm not brave enough to say anything at the time!

I have a scratch on my rear bumper and a little dent on my rear door, all of which I can live with.

Scuffed or scratched alloys I simply can't stand. Very strange I know  :D

I have been told i come across intimidating to anyone working on my car haha :) i only have one small mark on my alloys and that was done before i took ownership and its only a 3/4mm rub mark. :D

This reminds me of my alloys refurb thread 2 or 3 years ago FML having flashbacks here! After threatening me and being mega agressive they realised how pis sing off someone who brings ten's of thousands into their business for years for all fleet repairs was a BAD idea. Recommended them to doze 's of folk too. Never did after.

Whenever changing a tyre or removing a wheel I always had a bottle of valet pro bilberry cleaner, washed the wheels off, took photos of any damage and then put all of the rim protecting covers etc on, changed the tyre over and cleaned off any grease I'd left, checked to see I'd not done any damage, to date not one rim damaged and a few customers happy with brake dust gone :P

Not good and I know how you feel, one of my local tyre fitters damaged all 4 of my mint Luna’s, they refused to accept responsibility so ended up in court, by the time the judge had finished it cost them over 4 times the amount it would have to get them refurbished!

How did you prove your case?

I didn’t need to, when I dropped the wheels off (I had been in there previously a week or so before asking if they could guarantee not to mark the wheels as they were mint, their reply was “our fitter is the best in the area!”) I pointed out how mint they were (and spotlessly clean).

Upon collecting them they agreed they were damaged but only wanted to pay for 2 of the 4 to be refurbished, I declined this as explained it was all 4 that had been damaged so they all required refurbishing.

We could not come to an agreement so I informed them that if I were to take them to court then it would be for replacement wheels, the Judge had no issues with this so awarded in my favour plus my loss of earning for the day and all the court proceedings expenses.

What didn’t help was they ignored the 1st court summons, so it was ruled in my favour in their absence, they later appealed but the Judge was having none of it as they had just ‘sat on’ the court papers hoping it would all go away, they could not give the Judge any satisfactory reason why I should not be awarded my costs for loss of earning so I got that also.

They paid by cheque in full later that day and to my surprise the cheque cleared in a few days!

Result.
