tightening torques!

Featured Replies

Does anyone know the torque settings for:

-front hub nut

-track rod end

-lower arm ball joint(3 small bolts)

-strut pinch bolt

-inner cv joint flange bolts (6 star bolts)

Thanks for your time and much appreciated if you can help!!!

12 point front hub nut - Stage1 - 50Nm. Stage2 - Angle tighten 45 degrees.

Track rod end ball joint nut - Stage1 - 20Nm. Stage2 - Angle tighten 90 degrees.

Lower arm ball joint (3 bolts) - Stage1 - 20Nm. Stage2 - Angle tighten 90 degrees.

Strut pinch bolt Stage1 - 60Nm. Stage2 - Angle tighten 90 degrees.

Depends on the year of car and size of the bolts for the driveshaft flange bolts.

Cheers lads much appreciated and tmb they look a m6 star bolt

According to Haynes, they're either M8 or M10

What year is your car?

Probably a m8 then and it 2005

OK, M8 bolts, Stage1 - 10Nm. Stage2 - 20Nm. Stage 3 - Angle tighten 90 degrees.

Why can't it be like the old days when there was just one torque setting rather than all this angle tightening palaver. Bloody stretch bolts :p

Yer bloody pointless all the stage 1 stage 2 crap!!

It's not about them being stretch bolts, all bolts stretch as you do them up. Smaller torque value followed by angle is a much more accurate method of attaining the designed pre-load in the fastener. Because the angle tighten stage gives you a definite amount of extension (angle/360) x thread pitch, where torqueing alone gives very variable extensions depending on thread condition, mating surface condition and lubrication. Angle tightening = better controlled pre-load = safer. :)

The car's not a vRS is it? ETKA suggests that'll have M10 spline bolts 's'far as I can see.

^ Ah I see :)

Tighten everything to ****ing tight lol

^ Haha :D

Yes it is a vrs is the difference for the m10 bolts then if so what is the torque value

M10 bolts , Stage1 - 10Nm. Stage2 - 50Nm. Stage3 - Angle tighten 45 degrees.

Nut to secure inner and outer track rods. 10nm initially then when track rod end/ outer track rod tightened do upto 50nm

Hexagonal track rod end nut. 20nm then 90degree turn.

If you're doing the outer CV joint or boot you don't need to disconnect the driveshaft at the inner joint. You can replace both with the driveshaft still on the car.

True. But personally I’ve always found it much easier to take it out and do it on the bench. Makes a better job and less likely to accidentally pull the inner joint apart.
