Changing rear brake pads

Featured Replies

Hi,

The last service I had the garage recommended replacement of the rear pads soon. Anyone done a rear pads replacement? Do the calipers just push back, or do they need to be wound back like the Toyota I used to have?

The car has done 79k miles and I'm finding it odd that the rears need replacing before the fronts? I've had the car from new.

thanks

Martin

Yes very odd, just had mine done all round and they were all pretty equal.

Sorry can't help on the DIY bit though, would have thought they were just push back though.

Rewind tool because of the integrated handbrake.

There are some stretch bolts there as well that should be replaced if you like doing things 100%.

You'll need the appropriate triple square bit to remove the carrier (and a big bar as the torque is insane) if you intend to replace the rotors (which you should).  Also have a good look at the dust shield for corrosion.

The rears wear earlier than the fronts because of the ABS and under light braking the rear brakes actuate before the front to reduce the severity of the nose dive.

Interesting - didn't know that but makes complete sense!

It's what the Octavia does.  I'm assuming the Superb follows suite.

Reviving an old thread here..... I had a nightmare when trying to replace pads and discs this weekend. Got the old ones off/out but the piston rewinding tool I used wouldn't fit 'inside' the caliper to allow the tool's backing plate to push against the caliper. So, I tried just manually pushing and turning which didn't move it. I then tried a G-clamp which of course didn't work either. THEN I realised I was probably working against the hill holder. Given the rear of the car was up on axle stands I couldn't drive forward to release this, so promptly gave up, and put the old brakes back on. With the car down I took it for a drive and I either have air in the system or I've broken something, as the pedal travel is now close to the floor. I took it to a mechanic today with my tail between my legs....

If I had simply opened the brake bleeder would I have had more luck? I was going to but had fears of then not being able to bleed the system (ABS, etc).

The caliper piston will only go back if it's wound in the correct direction.

In theory, yes the piston should have gone back in if the bleed nipple was opened (provided it was being wound in the correct direction).

Thanks for that!

Hi all, I did my front discs and pads the other day now want to do rear pads. I have the rewind kit. Are both rear pistons right turning to go in? The pack comes with left and right rewind tools. Cheers Dom

I bought and used the Laser 5751 Adjustable Brake Caliper Rewind Tool

Very clever design and comes with different fitments.

I’m going to do the rear bump stops at the same time as the rear discs. I’ve bought axle stands. Any suggestions on best configuration for trolley jack and axle stand? I can only find info on placement for Octavia. I have a superb 2 estate 1.6 greenline

Hi will, can you advise as to where I should trolly jack and axle stand in order to do rear brakes? Cheers Dom
