consol bushes

Featured Replies

Can the consol bushes be change in situ, i've seen a you tube video of the polo, I've purchased a bush removal/ insertion tool but on looking I wonder how you would pull the wishbone forward out of the bush before removal  is it easy to get the wishbone back into the new bush as there would not be any play in a new bush.

I guess yours is an early mk2, so has the same arrangement as the mk1. If so, there's a big thread about changing the console bushes here.

Getting the wishbone out of the old bush is aided by getting the car (safely) nice and high off the ground so that the wishbone can be waggled/rotated through a large angle around the bush-bush axis while pulling forwards, which makes it come out more easily.

Re-fitting the wishbone back into the new bush can be easy if the 'official' lubricant (see linked thread) is used on standard bushes, or requiring a ratchet strap and a bit of effort if fitting into the Cupra-style metal-clad type as described in that thread.

Personally, I found cutting the old bush out of the console to be one of the least fun parts of the job.

Dealers recommend replacing the whole wishbone as although it costs more in parts, its much easier, hence cheaper in labour, almost breaking even and giving you a whole new setup!

if you are doing it at home yourself the entire arm is far easier than just changing the bushes, far less wear and tear on patience and knuckles

OP's car is like this, mk1 style wishbones/consoles, I believe, from the way the question was phrased. The console bush isn't part of the wishbone if I'm right. Changing the whole console is more of a labour-saving approach, as new consoles usually come with bush pre-fitted.
