As I understand it, it is not illegal to touch a gas appliance if its your own aplliance. You cannot do it for anyone else/a living without Corgi, but if its your own it is not illegal...not recommended but not illegal.

If it was illegal, why do you think the DIY stores still sell gas bits/pipes/fittings?

WHAT HAVE YOU STARTED?? :mad::mad::mad:

its all your fault for mentioning boilers breaking down

ours had to have a go and it died today :(

thankfully it was only the thermocouple .... again! as i'm not a corgi i wont say i replaced it myself :P

As far as contracts go we looked at that and although the payments were

I was about to say that's poppycock but then I noticed the following on the Gorgi site.

The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 place specific duties on gas users, installers, suppliers and landlords. For example:

* Anyone carrying out work on gas appliances or fittings as part of their

business must be competent and registered with CORGI.

* Only a competent person can carry out work on gas appliances or

fittings. Do-it-yourself work on gas appliances or fittings could be

dangerous and is likely to be illegal.

'Likely' infers it may not be illegal to do it yourself but I doubt the insurance company would see it that way if the worst happened.

Interesting loophole though

Indeed a loophole, but its not illegal for you to play with your own gas system/appliances.

It doesnt surprise me that it isnt, as the DIY chains lobby'ed hard to keep the sale of bits going which sort of also surprises me that part P came in on the leccy front.

As far as the insurance goes in the unlikely event of in incident, whats the definition of "competant"?

I have often found common sense, a mechanical bent and logic far outway the qualifications on paper.

I had a central heating glitch on Saturday. I was screwing 6mm ply onto the kitchen floor prior to laying laminate. Unfortunately I miscalculated the length of the screws required and screwed the ply through the floorboard into the main 22mm central heating feed pipe :eek: :eek: Whoops :o:o

Ever tried to get an emergency plumber at 7pm on a Saturday? 24 hour service my *** :mad::mad:

Eventually tracked one down after a hour. He did the job efficiently and relieved me of 50 squid, which wasn't too bad I suppose :( :(

What an eejit :rofl::rofl::rofl:

I got a joiner to build a housing for my combi boiler a couple of years back. I forgot to tell him about the 15mm gas pipe under the floor running down to the tumble drier and he of course put a screw straight through it. Dug the floor out myself and replaced it. Ended up with a trench down the room as the pipe had to be replaced completely.

my fan packed up at weekend and all the trade places wanted
