Winterwheels for Superb estate

Featured Replies

I am on the look out for my wintertyres at the moment and I have a few questions.

The Superb is the first car for me that comes with TPMS. So the standard 18" I guess have a sensor sitting somewhere on the rim.

I normally put a smaller size wheel and tyre on for the winter - 205/55-16. So do I need to by 4 tyre pressure sensors and stick them onto the new rims?

Does the Superb need LI 91 or 94. When I search for tyres many dealers offer both 91 and 94. Looking at the car's gross weight I can use a LI 91 - 615Kg x 4 = 2460Kg

After I had a Nokian WR A3 on our V70 I am looking for a asymmetrical tyre again. What other manufacturers do asymmetrical winter tyres?

Found my answer to LI and speed index: minimum LI 91 and H if M&S tyres.

Any thoughts on the tyre pressure monitoring sensors?

I run summer 19" and 17" winter rims that both came with the car.

No issues with pressure sensors....but I'll check make and type of tyre when I'm next down at the storage. 17" run great and grip brilliantly in the snow - they just look a bit 'lost' visually on the car.

Tyre pressure sensing on the Superb uses the ABS sensors to detect one wheel spinning at a slightly different speed to the others. No extra hardware is used (It's also the least accurate TPMS available, but it's saved me 3 tyres so far by catching punctures before the tyre went dangerously flat). Also the minimum load rating is 92 AFAIK (Some 18" tyres come in this rating), but for 17" or smaller tyres you'll usually end up having to get 94. I run 16" OEM Octavia alloys for the winter and 17" alloys for the summer. I wouldn't go near 18" wheels, but then again I drive Irish B roads regularly...

If you have the 170 bhp engine or above 16" is the smallest wheel that will fit, if you have the good fortune to be driving a 3.6 then 17" is the smallest that will fit over the brakes.

As mentioned by psycholist the TPM on the Superb II is part of the ABS.

I replace my summer use 225/40 18" with 205/55 16" Vredestein Wintrac Extreme and up the pressure by 0.2 bar as mentioned in the user manual.

The TPM doesn't activate when I switch so the circumference must be pretty close.

The speed rating and load index is the same for both sets.

I think you'll find most winter tyres are directional/ asymmetrical as it offers the best grip in rain and snow.

Agree with all the above - I run 18s in summer and 16s in winter. Due to the 16s being a narrower wheel as well and the more chunky grip the wet weather performance is outstanding - no twitching of steering with standing water but lots of big splashes :D.

When I change my wheels I always carry out the TPS reset so the car can re learn the new wheels settings and have never had any trouble with false alarms.

I'm running on Continental Winter Contact TS 850 and are very happy with them. 2 winters down and still plenty of tread left.

Lots of choice on tyreleader at the moment. Just remember that the really cheap ones are generally older DOT stamped.
