Octavia 1.6 diesel..any good ?

Featured Replies

Hi all, looking to change my 4x4 Octavia estate in the near future and am liking the thoughts of £30 a year road tax and 60 odd to the gallon with a 1600 diesel estate, any good or bad stories out there you could share, are they anywhere near as good as the pd engines.....thanks

I had two Mk2 1.6 CR estates, 1 manual & 1 DSG. The power delivery is smoother, but without the bottom end punch of the PD. Economy was around mid 50's for me in the manual and a couple of mpg less in the dsg. With the manual you need to change down more than the PD, so it takes a bit of getting use to. DPF filter on the CR could be an issue if you run short journeys.

I was using 1.6 diesel for 3 years, no big problems, usual cambelt, egr replaced, clutch replaced and thats all. Little bit underpowered engine, personally for me but insurance, road tax and fuel economy always cover that. Now bought VRS and still have 1.6tdi Elegence estate in silver. If you interested please let us know you will love the price ☺☺☺

I find it ok running empty, as soon as its loaded with passengers n luggage it really really needs more power. Over taking is another thing....... Not great. Based on a taxi drivers reviews

So far it's been reliable, although front shockers are showing signs of needing replaced

@Krotov71, send me details, I'm always looking for new taxis :-)

Thanks all for your replies and input.

krotov71 have inboxed you ;)

We've put almost 75,000 miles into an '11 plate' 1.6Tdi (CR) in the past 3 years, with engine issues

It gives me 50+ MPG on my useage, even locally; 'stop-start', but SWMBO gets less, as she wears lead-heels

I did a trip down the M1 to East Midlands Airport last summer, & got the trip-computer to show 79.5MPG as an average, needless to say, I was happy with that

Never trust that computer because real consumption will be higher. Won't be much though :)

We bought the 1.6cr estate as we needed room for expanding family, the previous 3 door fiesta making way for the Octy.

£30 tax, 50mpg average and £200 fully comp both named drivers along with space and value for money are the main reasons we bought it. It does what it says on the tin a great low cost load luggger with plenty of comforts in elegance spec.

The other half loves it and finds it adequate in terms of performance. I run a 150pd and feel it could do with just a little more (120/130hp) just to make it that little more flexible in overtaking, just lacks a little grunt. However with a bit of planning you can make it work.

I enjoy driving it and its been reliable having covered 16k odd in last 18 months.

Sounds like that's the way to go next then....I love my 4x4 octavia but do find the ride a bit firm.

Sorry, just re-read that, it should say 'NO engine issues'

It's co-incidental, as I'm really fancying the 4x4 estate next time, as I do a fair amout of fell-running, & some parking areas are a bit 'problematic' (slight increase in ground clearance may help at places like Penistone Hill, at Haworth too)

Personally I'd say go for it, it's a great car, very cheap to run and oodles of room, had mine five months with no issues bar an air con regas and that's not the cars fault.

We have managed to get me my wife and our ten month old daughter and dog all in along with holiday stuff comfortably.

It's great on the motorway with the cruise control, generally speaking around the sixty pounds mark to fill the tank and every time so far with mixed driving conditions I have had more than six hundred miles :)

As a growing family it suits us just fine. I did get the rear windows tinted for the baby and dog, looks much better for it. Just need an oem sat av unit now to replace the Bolero THEN I will be totally happy lol. HTH.

I was go to ask the same question about the 1.6 Tdi Cr engine, in my work I'm a self employed courier so I do about 9000miles roughly a month. I would like to know from other members is the engine can cope with high mileage ie 70000 miles plus a year.

How good is the DSG gearbox with coping with high mileage?

What to look out with this box ie dose it need change of oil or is it a sealed box?

My present Octavia is fitted with 1.9PD engine and now the mileage 164000 miles with the manual box.

The only problem I've had is rattling DMF and avarage of 56mpg from top up the tank to filling the tank.
