an old question but confuse me for long time

Featured Replies

Dear Guys,

I am a new driver and don't have much experience on buying second hand cars. Currently i am driving my 2004 skoda fabia mk1 with the milleage only 77000 km. my car cost me 4000 euro when i bought it. now i saw another 2005 mazda 6 which is only 2700 euro but with the millage of 200000 km.

i don't know how these old cars are valued?  is the year more important or the millage ?

let's say there is a 2005 octavia with only 50000 km on clock and the other one is from 2007 but with much higher mileage which is 150000km. suppose these two cars are labeled the same price tag. which one should i choose?

BTW, do you think that mazda 6 is a good deal?

prob'ly the one with the best service history  body work being equal      as for the mazda  it's larger and therefore less desirable as a second car vs furby  also depends on engine and spec' also for some reason Mazda's seem to rust quicker than say ford's which are similar or interchangable

Generally I'd look for the better condition car that fits my needs, bearing in mind that dull paintwork can be fixed with work and a good quality car polish. There's no real way to fix an engine that's done 65_000km without an oil change.

For example, if you're just driving around Rotterdam, a Fabia is a better car than any Octavia or Madza 6: Conversely, if you were driving to den Bosch or Assen and back every weekend, the Fabia would be the worst choice of the 4 you mention.

thanks for the advice. In my case, we don't drive very often. We normally only drive during the weekends for holiday or some leisure time.

i think in that case a mazda 6 or octavia should be our better choice than fabia.

Some say ..you can do even more than 65k km without an oil change.  :strong:

If you are convinced, then try it - There is no way I would even consider running longer than the manufacturers recommendations.

It was a joke :notme:  ..

I thought it was clear that I am not The Stig?

I do mine every 3 months. Might seem excessive, but it has now done 212000 miles.

Suffering a wee bit from head lift in the last 6 months so being as I can no longer DIY it, shall have to locate a garage to nip up the headbolts before I go for the full head gasket.
