weird cold start behaviour

Featured Replies

Well it was a cold damp morning this morning, and started my octavia 4x4 and it made its usual racket but the revs were all over the shop, it went up to 2k and then acted like it was trying to reduce this immediately and kept bouncing back up again to prevent stalling. makes a weird sound with all this quick rev adjusting too.

is this normal behaviour, its my first cold (<5 deg) start since buying ? 3 mins down the road, idle was fine.

Mine has never done anything like that.

Mine on cold starts would go to 2k and hold steady until it had sorted itself out...then drop to 1k.

Wouldn't drive until it had done this as it would kangaroo a bit...fine once the emissions had sorted it self out.

guess I will just have to keep an eye on it, suppose switching from tesco 99 ron to optimax might not have helped the night before. not that I shall be using optimax again, rough as a dog idle compared to the smooth 99 ron stuff.

mums does it sometimes... just switch on leave for 30secs then it settles down. guess its comp. playin around

Depends if you got a batch which had been sitting in the forecourt tank along time....Optimax does "go off".

Personally I find it better than BP Ulitmate, which is more consistant but more expensive....smoother and more mpg in my experience.

To get some consistancy in Optimax you may want to try adding an octane booster....Millers Octance plus...if you buy it in packs of 10 works out at under

you are probably right, but the truth is I really noticed a difference switching from normal petrol to tesco 99 ron but nothing switching from normal to optimax except the rough idle! I did buy the optimax from 2 garages at 2 different times, but both times the same result. Tesco 99 ron gave more power at medium revs, you could feel the car wanting to respond all the time when cruising at motorway speeds. I really recommend it. but anyway, its back to the great fuel debate eh!

Aye....I can get Tesco's 99RON but it's around a 20min drive away.

Have alway used Optimax and apart from one tank have always found it fine. Need at least a couple of tanks though.

Although the 99RON is good I do worry about super market fuels as your never know....as if you do with branded fuel  ....how good they are.

yeah true, basic tesco fuel is as good as coal, but this 99 is great for 94p or something. suppose as long as you keep the injectors and engine flushed regularly, you should be ok.

Just out of interest, is tesco fuel delivered in tesco branded tankers in the UK?

here in ireland Tesco deliveries seem to be handled by Statoil, a nordic brand we have... I supppose the could be filled with Tescos fuel rather than there own but I doubt it...

Ah Tesco's.... heres me thinking i'd found one in the midlands when i filled up with Texaco high octane the other night...

mine completely objects to cold starts until the idle has settled (normally within a minute or so)... if i try to pull off before the car does splutter and complain.

i call it grumpy.

I've always found the 1.8T to be a complete dog when cold :D. However, if it's *even* worse than normal, you should probably suspect the temperature sender.
