Downloading now. Not too slow tbh

(Though I am on a 500Mb link)

...........

Verifying.........

Bish bosh done.

3.3Gb in about 5min.

Took longer to verify than to download.

Wish the home BB was like that.

Now when do I feel brave enough to redo the OS on my main machine.

Just done one of my REVO's this way.

Only issue is that it wont validate my old win8 key.  Will work on that.

cheers, been about 10 mins or so here. A 70 year old friend in the netherlands saw it on the news, decided to log in and it updated his machine. I registered months ago and not a thing here! typical :-)

I hope none of you are running NVIDIA gfx; there has already been a HUGE problem with Win10 auto updates and NVIDIA auto updates having fisticuffs.

I'm not planning on doing anything with it for a month or two.

Laptop does have NVidia chipset so not touching that for a bit.

We have a year to claim it. I'll wait 9 months at least.

I have been running the trial versions for quite some time, all working well since upgrading my daily PC last night. As above configuration took longer than download.

Mate of mine tried yesterday. Laptop went through no problem. PC borked and rolled back to 7. No idea why yet.

He hasn't commented on the experience yet

Yeah I did it anyway, impatient sod that I am.

No problems at all.

Questions on the W10 download. Does the download have to be done on the PC that the download is done on ? e.g. I have a download limit of 1GB/month, but my son has unlimited high speed BB, so he could download a copy for me. Secondly ,is this an upgrade, to upgrade e.g W7 to W10, so that if I want to keep my W7, I'd have to install a seperate version of W7 on a fresh partition and upgrade that. Then verify/authenticate that.

I downloaded the ISO image onto an external drive & then burnt onto two disks & my sons have both upgraded using those.  I downloaded & ran Belarc advisor just to make sure I had the key for W8.1 on my laptop in the event I might go back from W10 to W8.1. It also extracted keys for other programmes I'd put on the laptop, as well as a lot of other info. I then did the upgrade using one of those disks. The upgrade went OK & all my programmes were there afterwards. Just out of curiosity I ran belarc again, & the W10 key is now different. After a week I have found only one programme that wouldn't work immediately, but solved that by right clicking the shortcut & selecting Properties, then Security & editing special permissions, after that it was fine.

When opening Edge your Favourites will not be there, but if you go to the dropdown menu below the 3 dots at the RH side, then click on Settings, there is an option to import your Favourites from another browser programme. So far I don't really have any complaints, like anything new it just takes a little while getting used to the differences.

I'd be wary of reserving a copy on your machine. If you do it'll do the download in the background and that's about 4Gb. You can get the ISO on any machine with the link in my first post. I've not tried it that way so you'd need to follow the instructions on the page or elsewhere on the web.

Aspman, thanks for that link. That's how I installed mine. The "Get Windows 10" thingy didn't work and failed to download it (it kept trying). The 'sofware creation tool' in your bottom (second) link works beautifully and not only downloads and installs Win10, but allows the creation of a dvd for future clean installs. No License Key required ever for Win10 upgrades. You are put on a special server that verifies without a key. Well, actually there is a key but you don't have to see or bother with it. As I've said elsewhere in the 'shed', my 10 is working superbly without any issues. If anyone is having issues I'd do a clean install. That will nearly always be the cure and may even help with driver issues. As a Linux fan, I'm quite liking 10 which is for me a big surprise as I'm not a fan of MS.

Can you buy a new key though? So you can just do a clean install should the need arise.

No need.

I first did the upgrade and let windows activate. Then downloaded the above and created a USB drive. Did a fresh install and windows automatically activated. I think you use your windows 7/8/8.1 key and windows just know you have done the windows 10 upgrade.

The ISO has a program that checks the validity of your current install then creates a new key for you as part of the build.

Not too sure how that would work in the future if your hd goes pop. Maybe you can download the new key and print, I don't know.

For the paranoid (like me) - http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/08/windows-10-doesnt-offer-much-privacy-by-default-heres-how-to-fix-it/

How to turn off all the bits of Win10 that try to call home.

After I updated I pulled the key out of windows and on a subsequent clean install used that key without issue. Plus win10 seemed much happier on a clean install than it had on the upgraded edition.

For anyone that is worried, I'd suggest you use one of the many programs mentioned in the win10 threads and make a record just in case.

I did a clean install after upgrading. Skipped inputting a key at installation. Windows then just activated automagically.

I will use one of those tools now though to get my serial as it would be nice to have just in case.

Good news. Looks like I can get a download copy from someone who can download without breaking the download limit. But I've decided ( knowing MS upgrades of the past) ,to creat a fresh partition and install W7 on that, to upgrade to W10, thus keeping my old setup.

If you are planning a dual boot with win7 and win10, I dont think it will work.

AFAIK your win7 license will expire when you upgrade to win10
