Beginners advice

Featured Replies

When I get back from our holidays the car will no doubt need a good clean. I'm sick of paying others to do it, so was planning on coughing for a pressure washer and some cleaning product.

I'd prefer to get clean and long lasting wax than ultimate shine. I used to use Autoglym gloss on top of their normal Polish. I'm guessing there are better products though.

I guess the budget would be around £250. That's what I spend at least on keeping the two cars clean every year.

Halfords are still on 3 for 2

Get some good wash, clay bar kit, polish, wax, wheel cleaner, wheel sealer, tyre dressing, glass polish/cleaner, interior shampoo, wash mit, micro fibre clothes, wheel brush (plastic), bucket, drying towel, water blade.

I know that's a big list but those are just some of the basics you need before moving up to the better my expensive tools/waxes

As for brands go I would say the AG range is very good. Cheap, easy too use and can get it most places.

Products do range in price and tbh I think it's all down to personal tastes I like the AG range have used it for years and get some great results with it others say other wise :)

Great shout from Paul, keep it Autoglym, especially as they are 3 for 2 at halfords. Although you'll probably find them cheaper still online.

Nilfisk are decent pressure washers and are a luttle cheaper than Karcher. I think arg9s do them.

Wax wise, Autoglyms HD Wax is pricey. I've heard great reviews on bilt hamber double speed wax. And it's cheap as chips. Definitely worth a sshout.

£250 is more than enough to get you some fantastic products. If you don't mind buying from here and there, the world is your oyster. But if you just want to go somewhere and buy the job lot, halfords is your main choice.

Yea as above

Halfords WONT be cheapest BUT it's there ready of the shelf to use :)

If you can wait then knock your self a Amazon basket or eBay one but halfords are in most city's now :)

I use the HD wax and it's very good

I also have a pot of the double speed wax which is great doesn't seem to give the same deept shine as the HD stuff but still great if you don't have time for a full wax :)

How have you found durability between the HD wax and Double speed wax please Paul? Thanks buddy.

Sound advice from the guys on the thread already.

Halfords 3 for 2; and AG HD wax is superb - albeit a bit pricey for what it is.

Another option on the wax/sealant would be FK1000P.

Amazing product for < £20 and very versatile.... ie. paint, alloys, etc.

Apart from price

HD wax £30

Double speed £16

HD wax goes on really smooth takes a while to cure/ be ready to come off leaves a LOVELY deep finish lasts a weeks beads well

DS wax goes on drier then what I am used to/would like can be buffed off almost instantly nice wet look finish lasts about the same as HD only down side I have found is and this could be down to user error I found that if not applied evenly if would leave different levels of depth of shine :-/

Both waxes preform as good as some of the bigger brands

HD wax comes as a kit with cloths and pads to apply wax DS come with just a pad

I used to have zymol wax which was VERY good however at like £80 a pot :-/ was very dear and tbh the others give just as good finish :)

Any links for that?

Wouldn't mind trying that :)

Might give it a little go as I am looking for a new wheel sealer as I am disappointed with the new AG wheel protector :-/

You don't fancy the ceramic sealant route for alloys?

Seems popular with many members - Carbon Collective for example.

How dears that?!?

Sounds like it could be out of my budget lol!!

Yep - that's the one... and where I purchased as well.

They also do a test pot for £4 plus (cheaper than others) P+P, going to give it a try this weekend.
