wasted my time?....

Featured Replies

So yesterday I had my middle and rear silencers removed from exhaust thinking I'd get a nice sporty note from my vrs tdi cr. Nope, not at all if anything she is a bit troatier on idle and when switching engine off.

The guy I dealt with said that it was my DPF that was holding all the noise, jesus it's still so quiet I actually wonder why skoda even put middle and rear silencers on the car.

So my question is, have I wasted my time by removing these boxes and replacing them with stainless steel pipe or should I have gone another route to reach my target of a nice grumble?

I'm brand new when it comes to exhausts to be fair so I'm left scratching my head

Don't get me wrong, without the boxes she deffo revs alot freely or it could be placebo who knows.

Removing any boxes should make car rev faster but are you feeling the noise and power gains because you are looking for it...

I would have said you would need to do a lot more to the system before feeling hugh gains :-/

I replaced my system cat back with a miltec and it's only very slightly louder on tick over not really any gains in power looks cool but nothing else .

Have you literal just swapped the centre pipe for a stainless steel piece?

Replaced back box?

I basically have a straight through from my dpf now. No rear box at all just a nice new looking double tip on the rear.

I was hoping for alot of grumble with a choo sound between letting off the gas and changing gear if that's makes sense?

Seen a few on you tube with a dpf delete/guts knocked out and they sound lovely for a diesel!

I didn't wanna risk mot failure so left the dpf alone in all fairness but contemplating knocking it out now to get what I want note wise out of my exhaust.

As far as I am aware the exhaust noise is created with exhaust pressure fluctuations. Anything that evens out the fluctuations will reduce noise. It could well be the DPF or even the turbo that are reducing the noise to some extent. That could have been a good mod too. Unfortunate it didn't work out but it should give a wee bit more power.

Would a ss system make the dump noise sound your after?!?

Mines petrol and only makes then wwhhoooossashhh noise after fitting blow off kit

Guy I dealt with told me soon as I knock out the dpf it'll do it. Just don't want to compromise mot and pay silly money to programme it out of ecu etc.

Heard a dump valve on a diesel, in short, no ha

What about a DPF bypass pipe welded in going from before to after the DPF, or would that cause MOT issues?

For the current MOT regs, I don't believe it will as there is only a visual inspection. If you've got a DPF shaped thing where they'd expect a DPF then it should be fine.

However, I do keep hearing rumours about some kind of pressure test that will be able to detect the above and cause you to fail an MOT.

A bypass pipe with a valve on it that can be closed at MOT time so all (or almost all) exhaust gas goes through the DPF. There's a wee niche in the market.

That would almost certainly make the car go into limp mode as it would confuse the he'll out of the ecu.

Wouldn't my pressures be altered though as ive removed middle and rear boxes though?

Think I'm gonna go for it and just knock it out. I can potentially do this myself, the physical part.

My only problem is changing ecu sensor parameters etc as it'd no longer be there. If I didn't programme it would this cause chaos with my car so you think.

Just people keep saying ill have to have a remap and to be fair I don't want a remap off anybody but shark really as only heard good things about them. Problem is shark wanted 800 to do the dpf.

Perfect world is knock the crap out of dpf myself then take it straigt to shark for map a day later I guess.

The dpf is an arse to get to and a right pain to do without the car on a ramp.

That's a fair point. It might be OK if the DPF was mapped out but you would need manual forced regens. Not a simple solution then.

My 335d and 330d sounded awesome for diesels, the 335d being the best by a country mile.

Having had an insane amount of Jap stuff prior, is say unless you're wanting stage 2 with regards to performance gains, ie DPF & a new exhaust, chasing a better sound in a 2L diesel at great expense is pointless.

Buy a 3L diesel or bigger....

Go to stage 2 and anything else noise wise is a bonus and be the first guy to have a custom made titanium exhaust on an Octy.

Or buy a Jap car and buy a good exhaust.

Personally, I'd just go to stage 2 and anything else is a welcome bonus but don't expect much :)

I hear ya pal. I had an Astra before my octy and some of the lads had their 1.9cdti sounding great I'm just after a similar noise really.

I'm new to engine modding to be honest always just done the cosmetic looks of my cars so it's a learning curve for me.

So, you mention stage 2, with my dpf internals gone, middle and back box also, which gives me a straight through pipe from block. Is this good enough to go to stage 2 on my tdi or am I looking at changing other things etc? Sorry if I sound thick but really haven't a clue at the moment.

Obviously going stage 2 vs stage 1 ill be putting more strain on clutch/flywheel surely?

The list of mods grows and to be honest I'd be happy with a standard block with dpf knocked out and mapped out to software wise.

Can always look for a power map down the line then I guess.

Holidays to pay for at the moment!

Don't think it's the size, it's the number of cylinders! Totally agree though, trying to make a 4 cylinder diesel sound "sporty" is a waste of time.

Given the money you could spend on exhaust and stuff, and how efficient the petrol vrs is - the best way to get a decent noise would be to swap to a petrol! Much faster too
