lcd display in maxidot unreadable- recommended repair company?

Featured Replies

Hi All,

The LCD display in my pre-face-lift maxidot has deteriorated over time and has got to the point of it being virtually unreadable.

I'd like to fix this problem, I wondered if anyone had any experiences with any of the repair companies?  Would you recommend (or otherwise) any particular one? (e.g., clusterrepair, BBAreman)

If you did use any of the repairers, what work did you have done, at what cost, and how long did it take?

All responses gratefully received!!!

JLT

When you say deteriorated, what does it look like? Can you post a picture?

Mine was unreadable in the centre when I bought the car, and it slowly fixed itself, probably by drying out the contacts on the LCD.

Although you can get the screen repaired, if yours is really broken, it would probably be cheaper to get a used cluster on ebay and get it coded in. They come up from time to time quite cheaply.

Hey Softscoop,

Thanks for your reply :-)

I've placed a pic in a new album, and I think the below is a link?? (Not posted a pic on this forum before - seems a bit convoluted!)

The images I took don't really show what you see with your eyes - the contrast on the images is different - but the pic does show how awkward and faded the screen is.  You have to get in the right light to be able to see anything at all, but it seems all the pixels are working because the characters and symbols are there, they're just heavily faded.  (This images shows time at the top, "Please fasten your seatbelt" in the middle, and mileage / trip on the bottom).

Not sure a self repair will happen for me - its been like this a fair while now!  The severity of the problem used to be seasonal (i.e., problem would be less extreme in winter, and worse in summer, suggesting moisture could be the cause), but the display is consistently at this level of illegibility now.  You got any thoughts on whether this particular case warrants repair or replace??

Thanks again

JLT

It's worth taking the cluster out and the face plate off. You might be lucky and push a loose connector back together.

I've used http://www.cartronix.co.uk before. Excellent service. Fixed a broken LED on my speedo - did a top job cheaply & quickly.

Bit of a trek for you, but they might do it all by post. Give them a call and have a chat.

Is yours a vRS or normal Octavia?

Here is a used maxidot cluster for a normal TDI

Hi again!

Its a vRS TDI.  Ideally I want to repair my current cluster, but thanks v much for the heads up on that cluster on ebay.  If I got a 2nd hand cluster (such as that on ebay) any idea how I'd get it coded in?

Thanks

Not quite the case Mike.

Eddie has got CR clusters working on a PD and vice versa.

Even a petrol cluster working fine on a TDI.

I'm behind the times then.! Note the rev counter counter reading will be wrong if you install a petrol unit into a diesel car. Tacho is calibrated differently.

I don't know about that either. Eddie seems to have worked his magic on that mk5 in the video. When started it idles just under 1000rpm.
