Waiting for the new reg

Featured Replies

Not bought a new car for a long time. Now they update the registration prefix every 6 months is there any point waiting for the new September plate in the event that my car was delivered to the dealer in the next week or so (other than the bragging rights of the new reg).

I would probably wait if the car is delivered to the dealer a couple of weeks before. But what about those that are able to collect, say this week.

If you agreed the "new" reg at order point that's what you will get. So if you said I want the car for 65 plate you will have that option. If however you said that you wanted it as soon as possible then you may get it as a 15 plate.

So your question any reason why to hold on, yes resale value will be effected later on. How much is probably not that much.

Depends on your own personal reasons.

My 59plate Octavia arrived at the end of 2009 (28th) but it had to be registered then and not in the new year.

If you collect the car now you may get a more thorough PDI as the dealer will be busier as the month gets on. Personally, if it is not costing you to wait I would hold-off for the new new plate purely because of the resale value/appeal when you come to sell. In either case I hope all goes well.

Is there not something happens ING with car tax on 1st of September with a wheel sizes or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

I am in the same situation too. A week away from getting my car and wondering if I should wait for new registration.

Pick mine up tomorrow or thurs, not worried about new plate as its PCH :)

Wheel sizes?

Will that make a difference? 19inch!

iamdave, I'm getting mine Saturday. Happy Days!!

Check out the latest brochure - you will see that wheel sizes do have an impact on VED across all Octavia models.

However I don't think this is a change that is dependent on Sept 1st.

What is going to change next year is the change to VED as announced in the recent budget thingy. This will see the benefits to all low emission vehicles disappear in a puff of exhaust smoke.

Only the best / most efficient cars will qualify for 0 VED - the rest will pay £141 (if I remember correctly) from the get go ... TBH it couldn't last, the Govt must be losing millions because of all these "green" cars being purchased..

That means that my vRS will need to pay £140 tax from 2017 instead of £30? Bummer...

No...

As I understand it - the new rates ONLY apply to NEW cars registered after the cut off date next year (whenever that is - not sure if its the start of the tax year or the start of the 16 Reg)

Good. I read it that All cars would be paying the £140, but maybe it meant "All NEW" cars

I would imagine the dealer will want to register the car ASAP, don't they have monthly targets to hit?

how long are you planning on keeping the car

if your planning on keeping it for a long time, it'll matter not a jot

if your car was gonna be delivered in December though, it's best to wait till the 1st January, as that makes more off a difference to the re-sale price

but again the longer you keep it, the less the difference.

Ask them if you can pick the plate if it's 15 as opposed to 65, dependant on the dealer they may have a big list of unallocated plates you can pick from. If there's none that you like, wait

Depends how close the car lands to new reg time and how you are financing it.

Technically on a VWFS finance arrangement the car has to be registered within several days of the car being received at the dealership so a less accomodating dealer could hold you over a barrel and make you take it on a 15 plate.

A more accomodating dealer might make excuses for you so you can take it on a 65 plate, or if you are paying by other means then you probably have more say.

Personally speaking.......the plates change so frequently and it makes so little difference to its residual value (nothing like as much as condition) it doesnt bother me unduely.

My last two cars I took in early Jan and late Feb respectively so missing the most current plate. Its a nice thing if the timelines work, or if its a first new car but otherwise not something to get too hung up about....max 6 months its an old plate anyway.

Cheers for the comments guys. Get the impression it would be OK to wait of wanted. And if it is a couple of weeks I probably will try and do so. If I don't have any choice then so be it.

Picked my reg today (15) picking up car next week!
