Replaced Roomster radio - no power!

Featured Replies

Anyone able to help with this rather frustrating problem? Got a 58-plate Roomster 1.4 TDi which I fancied upgrading to DAB, as I had done easily on my old Rover.

Bought a new DAB head unit to replace the original Dance double DIN unit, managed to fit the aerial all tidily, got a nice neat single DIN adapter for the fascia - but the darn thing just refuses to power up.

I've tried two different head units - a brand new DAB one and an old CD/FM one I had kicking about. Fuse is fine on both. Fuses seem fine on car as the original Dance unit works fine when I plug it back in.

So I can only conclude that there's an issue with my wiring harness adapters - which I've tried two of, from different manufacturers. Both are identical in that they both seem to have fewer pins (and a whole blue socket!) less than the plug in the car's loom. I'm attaching a pic of the car's plug and the wiring harness adapter in case this helps...

Thanks!

There's no switched ignition signal on those connectors on a roomy (or furby of the same age). Its done by CAN. However you can pick up a feed from the key in signal in the fusebox under the steering wheel. If you radio only uses this as a signal you can just wire it to the correct pin in the radio. Otherwise you will need to add a relay to switch a feed. The other alternative is to use an ignition feed from somewhere, but then the radio will only work with ignition on, not like now until you remove the key (S contact).

Nuts - that sounds slightly beyond my very limited knowledge of vehicle electrics!

Don't suppose it's something Halfords could do either....

It's a piece of cake, they all require a second 12v power source to the stereo so all you need is a piggy back fuse and some wire, you then find an ignition live and connect it to that.

Where are you located? I'm on my phone so can't see.

I'm in Glasgow, unfortunately!

By ignition live, do you mean something that only comes live with the ignition on, like the fuse for the 12v aux socket?

It's expensive, but would something like this work without mucking around with wiring? It's essentially what I already have in terms of the fascia adapter and wiring harness, but seems to also have some kind of CANBUS box of tricks attached.

Well I would say yes but I'd rather buy a £1 piggy back fuse and some wire at 20p? Look in the cars book under fuses and simply plug it into heated mirrors or something. It's really simple honestly.

I'd be fine doing that, but not too sure how I would go about splicing it into the wiring harness I have, and whether I need to earth it.

You don't splice the wires, it's been a while since mine was in but either the red or yellow wire loops back into the other by connectors, you remove the male from the female and snip the male connector and wire it to some wire you need, at the end of that you need to crimp the piggy back fuse. Not sure if the Fabia is the same as the roomster (I'm guessing it is) you need to swap the yellow and the red over so it's yellow red and red yellow connected.

Yes the ignition feed is the easiest of the suggestions so long as you are happy for it to only work ignition on. Some people like to sit in the car with the radio on. You can also pick up that key-in signal from the fusebox with a piggyback fuse.
