DRL's & MOT

Featured Replies

Just a quick (hopefully) question regarding DRL's.  My vRS is due it's first MOT next week and my driver side DRL is cracked although the light still works.  I've read online that DRL's are not covered by the test but can a tester still fail it if it's cracked?  I've replaced it twice now in 2 years and don't want to waste any more money changing it as it seems prone to stone chips on that side for some reason.

No he can not fail it on them. (maybe will put in the Advisories)

Have them switched off / Disabled.

Tape Over them if you want with Black Tape/ Fablon.

If you want them on and getting broken is an issue, then put Clear Tape / Lense Repair / Fablon / 3M Protection over both the Lenses.

Thanks very much.  If I do get it fixed again I'll stick some tape over it.  Funny how it's never happened to the other side though?

My Driver side breaks if a stone hits it,

and the passenger side breaks if i hit something.

2 Driver sides and 2 Passenger sides.

(I Bought Used ones from cars that had crashed and broken only one DRL/ Side Light.)

Doh,  Sorry.

I totally forgot that the DRL's were the Sidelights, so best not Tape them black, and put clear tape on.

Maybe you will have a Strict MOT Examiner.

I'm not sure on the legalities on a MOT for cracked DRL's, but as goneoffSki said they are also your sidelights, put clear tape over them and say you've only just noticed it and one is on order then hopefully it'll just be an advisory. I've had both cracked at different times, really annoying.

Here is a guide that I created for when you do get a new DRL.  http://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/304629-changing-the-drls-on-fabia-vrs/

in 3.5 years and 40k miles i never had 1 broken, try sitting back a few feet instead of a few inches off the car in front lol

Have you had a chipped or broken windscreen in the 40,000 miles?

Do you think a stone kicks up from the vehicles in front which you are so close to and that breaks the lense,

or might it be when you are parked at the road side and passing vehicles kick back a stone and it hits the offside DRL/Sidelight.

Road surface dependent.  (ie Chuckies)

George, in 25 years ive only had 1 cracked screen, guess im just lucky

oh and our roads are pants too

Every stone hit or chip to the paint, or broken screen i have had when in a vehicle i have heard or seen coming.

& I have had a few over the years that happened when nobody was in vehicles and they were parked which are only found after the fact.

The ones i have seen where from off a lorry coming towards & from a vehicle at the other side of a Dual Carriageway or Motorway,

so you are driving into a stone or what ever in the air, or from cars accelerating in another lane or a resurfaced road.

the latest was coming like a missile and luckily hit the door pillar and took a chunk out of it.

I though it would be the Windscreen or side window that it was going to get.

(when riding a Motorbike or Push Bike you really notice how many stones get thrown in the air by other vehicles.)

The Fabia vRS Sidelight / DRL Unit is just pretty crap at taking a hit compared to just about every other car with Driving Lights,

Fog or Spot Lights in the same position.

Out of 3,000 only cars in the UK it would be interesting to know how many replacements have been bought.

i saw a huge rock coming towards my visor once, now thats scary, it was all so quick i didnt have time to react but it was a new pants type moment for sure

  • 1 month later...

That's the vRS just passed its third MOT (first time again).
