DSG Gearbox questions

Featured Replies

Good Afternoon,

Yesterday my car wouldn't change gear and a spanner was flashing on the dash where it normally displays what gear I am in.

I pulled over and stopped the engine.

When I started again it was working fine.

Anybody else experienced this ?

Its coming up to 4 years old and due a service next month so I will mention it.

It is under warranty (from Sytner) but I don't want to mither them if it's nothing.

Also does it need the oil changing in the gearbox at four years old ? (its a six speed DSG)

Thanks,

Mickey.

HI, I would take it in and have the fault codes checked. Better to sort it early than be stuck somewhere.

The DSG oil is supposed to be changed every 40,000 miles as far as I know. Some people on here are reporting that their dealers don't know this though I have little doubt Skoda would use the improper servicing excuse to weasel out of warranty commitments if something went wrong.

What occurred with my Octavia, was that the DSG (7 speed) would not change gear from 2nd upwards and I was not able to use the "manual" selection either. The flashing spanner was being indicated.

This occurred twice in the first year of ownership.

The situations when it happened was when I parked roadside, having turned off the engine and left the key in the ignition with either my wife or me sitting in the car.

When I started the car, and drove off I realised that there was a problem but due to traffic conditions, I was unable to stop and continued to drive in 2nd until a safe place to park up.

After stopping, I then switched off the engine and restarted and everything went back to normal with the DSG box operating correctly.

I reported to the supplying dealer who investigated ("Oh that's a new one" ) but unfortunately was unable to diagnose the problem and found no fault.

It hasn't occurred in the last two years but not to tempt fate, I always remove the key ( or is that a red herring! )?

The 6sp DSG cars are pretty reliable on the whole. Occasionally the mechatronic box (electrical gubbings) can go la-la. Change DSG oil+filter @ 40k miles to keep it sweet.

7sp DSG still subject of a VAG recall. Original mineral-based oil perishes seals and wiring or something so they are replacing with synthetic oil. Or is that the other way round....? Anyway, you get the idea.

Bottom line, if its still under warranty at least book it in for them to check. Apart from a bit of inconvenience what do you lose?  Hope it turns out OK.
