I thought them City rovers were made in India!

I thought they were finished off over here , but that seems like a bit more than "finishing off"

Worth a read

I went to Gaydon yesterday, they've just bought the last Rover 75 off the production line. To go with the first one that's also there.

Wow awesome pics, love the idea of going somewhere to have a nosey at whats going on!

Spooky!

It looks like the City Rover in the picture is an old one as it has a Y-Reg plate on it. I'm only on page 10 of 20 so far though.

Nissan in Sunderland, minis made in Oxford? Toyotas in Derby ,Peugots in Coventry and this with the only real large (former)British maker.

Do all these foreign companies get subsidised to build over here?

Oh well. The Country has turned inside out.

That site is very interesting - Shame most of it is "inviation only" but I can see why !

There are government incentives for companies to build large new factories over here , yes.

Though that might seem a bit of an odd thing when we don't have any of our own volume car manufacturers here any more , but there is plenty of income generated from the economy by several thousand workers no matter which country the parent company comes from.

I don't think that it really matters that the brand names aren't english , we are still building some very high quality cars here in the uk

The City Rovers with parts missing were donor cars used for spares due to the poor parts supply from Tata.

IIRC, the 'foreign' marques build over here to side-step import/export quotas. I think Honda were first to do it in the early 80s(?), when the government tried to limit imports of foreign cars in an attempt to bolster Austin Rover et al. Fat lot of good that did! I guess the observation proves, however, that to be competitive, you need to build cars that buyers in other countries want - even considering Top Gear's hatchet job on French cars the other day!!! ;) Then again, every Nissan, MINI, Toyota or Peugeot built over here helps to keep Brits in a job, so it's not all bad...

Mind you, it brings to mind the ads for the new Clio - French Cars, British Designers. Surely that's the WORST POSSIBLE combination!?! :D Cars designed by the nation responsible for the Austin Princess (or any new Beemer, come to think of it), built by the nation responsible for the Citroen 807! Actually, it could be worse - imagine if FIAT styled their cars over here!!!

Of course the Yanks build loads of cr@p cars too, but their market's big enough that they don't need to send too many over here (thankfully!!!)

This is my big gripe. We have excellent skills here. They are being used by other car companies to build good quality, reliable (mostly) cars. The designers for Rover just produced duffers (IMO) and even the sketches for cars of the future looked rubbish. :(

The car graveyard in the photos saddens me.Why couldn't they have created a new 'golf' or at least something Europe and the world would fancy driving.

If Rover had produced good product + good engine + had good dealers,I would be patriotically driving one :)

Did anyone save those photos? They've been taken offline now :(

The Austin Pricess was stunning, in comparison to the British designed, Korean built Ssang Yyong Musso.
