Glow and start problems with Skoda Felicia 1999

Featured Replies

Here's the problem description with background info:

Usually the glow light lits every single time when I'm starting the car. Normal time and after that normal cranking and start. Ok this far.

Then sometimes it won't lit the glow light at all, normal cranking and start. This one is not that common but happens and it's ok.

Then the real problem: No glow light. Cranking normally, but will not start no matter how long I crank it. This doesn't depend on the ambient temperature or the motor temperature. Starting fluid won't help either. Nor does bump start help. Seems to me this problem is absolutely random and nothing helps until the glow light agrees to lit again.

Any ideas ?

Thanks in advance  :)

PS disconnecting the temp wires from thermostat housing won't help either..

From your description it looks like something got gradually worse on the electrical side. Check first the wiring to glow plugs, visually then wiggle the wires. Clean any corrosion from associated connectors. Have a look at glow relay too. If all is good, need to check the glow plugs.

Of course the quickest diagnosis method is to use a VAG-COM scanner and read the fault code(s).

Ok, when it starts, does it give white smoke and/or normally start on 2 or 3 cylinders, with the smoke clearing and/or the other cylinders joining in after a few seconds running?

When it starts as it should (i.e. the glow light comes on) it starts just fine. No extra smoke of any color and with all the cylinders at the same time. But sometimes the glow light doesn't lit and it still starts as described above. (And this is not dependable on engine temperature).

I didn't even know there would be any fault codes available in a Skoda this old...

Well then... I guess the pages below will be a shocker. There are cars from the 80's that store error codes.
