Can someone explain the point of gear switch recommendation thing?

I'm talking about that annoying thing in the picture (look at the red circle):

(don't get confused. This is a picture from Skoda Rapid)

I've tested that and somehow I think that it's completely useless. It recommends switching way too fast (maybe at 1,2k rpm) and it's a very uncomfortable driving. Skoda manual says that it helps in fuel saving but somehow I find it hard to believe. Computer shows that fuel consumption in low revs is rather high and probably all driving instructors teach one thing - don't switch to another gear too soon or too late.

So, the question is - what is the point of that thing?

Is it possible to switch it off somehow? That blinking is rather annoying...

Couldn't agree more - thing is completely useless - worse on my Rapid the display changes from the gear you're in to the one its recommending, it doesn't show both as yours does - haven't found any way to disable it as yet but we live in hope.

I've driven a few cars with this in... they all get it wrong.

Even factoring in the fact that it can't see what's going on ahead (I.e. a hill coming or a tight bend) which can be forgiven... it's still useless.

Telling you to change gear at 1200rpm is just silly. Especially in a diesel or any other turbo charged car for that matter even on the flat.

It should at least be on par with what a DSG would change at which is about spot on (about 2000rpm on the flat to drop the revs to about 1500rpm). Driving lower than 1500rpm except when slowing is gonna cause you issues!

It is purely down to maximising fuel efficiency.

The problem is (especially on diesel's) is that is puts the DMF (Dual Mass Flywheel) under tremendous strain resulting in premature wear / failure.

Ignore it is the best advice I have.

As above. Ignore it. Complete gimmickry nonsense!

Is there not a setting within the maxidot menus where it can be switched off? Other functions can.

There isn't one. YOu can believe me, I tried...

Yeah, save several buckets of fuel and pay 10 time more for DMF :D

But is it THAT efficient fuel saver in that low revs (theoretically)? Like I said, cars computer says that it consumes more than in like 2k rpm.

I ignore that because I have my own thoughts about right switching (like Phil-E stated above) but what about total beginners that gets the first car? If there is something then it probably has got some use and this so far is the most useless thing in the car I can even imagine. Not only useless but it's teaching people bad habits...
