19" wheel advice and spec options

Featured Replies

Hi everybody, had a 53 plate superb for three years now and finally got the money to buy a new motor. Going to hug an Octavia vrs diesel estate. Looking at the options list, and peoples opinions, would like to clear up a couple of things

Does the ride get ruined by the optional 19" wheels?

Which nav is best to go with? Is it worth shelling out on the full £1500 option?

Cheers JD :)

In my opinion the ride is already firm with 18's so I would strongly recommend a test drive before ticking the box for 19's.

The basic satnav is perfectly adequate for the odd few times I've used it, but you may appreciate the top spec unit if you're a heavy user. £1500 is a lot to spend though on something that will ultimately have little resale value.

The ride is no worse on 19"s as it is on 18"s, the tyres that come with the 19"extremes are rubbish though they are pirelli p-zero's and are terrible. The sat nav is one of those things if you feel its worth it. The new amundsen unit is improved over the launch units but I have the columbus, i had it in my last vrs so was an easy decision to spec it again

Having had Columbus on my mk2FL it is a very very good piece of kit. But I only paid £500 for it (second hand). Did I tick the option this time? No. As great as it is IMHO it's not worth the excess over the normal sat nav.

And as above it will not add much to the resale.

The ride on the 19" is about the same as the 18" maybe a little bit harder there nothing in it and I would go for the Columbus it very very good system I can't fault it at all and would have it again

I was panicking as we had to get 19. I live in West Yorkshire. Full of pot holes and speed bumps. Its an odd ride. Bumpy, but still a very good ride. I would get them again. The tyres are rubbish in the wet, but ok in the dry

Good thing about 19" alloys is it stops the boy racers carving you up on traffic lights, they think OMG that cars got power and let you drive off most times!

Come on, everybody knows that big rims and spoilers is worth at least 150bhp in addition to the stock output.

The Columbus looks much nicer, but whether the nav is any better I don't know. The nav I have in the Amundsen is perfectly adequate IMO, but I use it occasionally. If you're going to use it a lot of the time then it's probably worth shelling out the extra cash for it.

IMO the ride on the 19's isn't horrendous, it's similar to the 18's in fact. However I would recommend  a good test drive to see what you think. Also take into huge consideration what type of roads you will mostly be driving on. There's an increased risk of cracking/splitting with the 19's, and I would imagine rough roads full of holes don't help that at all. Plus when I last looked, the tyres for the 19's were about £50ish more expensive (each) than for the 18's.

The 19's look the dogs danglies though!
