  • Well the new rack is back on with the right bolt in the dogbone and we have success! Now time to run the clutch in thanks to everyone who gave advice

  • sounds like theres no power getting to pump which to me i check earths again if no joy check live and earth on pump

  • Check fuse number 7 (5 Amp) in the cabin fusebox. If that's blown, it might be a simple fix.

Happens to me all the time. All you can do is just chin up and sort it.

Right I think I have a theory.. When I was putting the box back in I didn't have big enough socket to get the driveshaft out so what I done was undone the wishbone where it holds to the hub, undone the drop link and pushed the suspension leg all the way to the right of the arch and wedged the leg down the side of wishbone.. This is where I'm certain it's gone wrong! I still had the track rod end bolted in and I think it's done damage to the rack and this is what's causing the no power steering

Today I have jacked up both sides unbolted the track rod end and and turned the wheel, runs nice and smooth going right but the first part of going left its stiff and notchy!

So could my theory be right I assume a damaged rack with stop the power steering? How easy is a new rack to fit?

That was with it jacked up both sides and the track rod disconnected from the hub

If you have disconnected both ends and you still get that stiffness, it can surely only be the rack itself.

I've had some good conformation that the rack is at fault, gfwc had the same problems with his after replacing his box, his was down to putting a longer bolt in the dogbone and it denting the rack.

So a new rack will be purchased and I will hope it sorts it.

Pain :(

How 'rough' were you with suspension?

As steering racks are usaully pretty robust.

Erm I can't say I was easy I was kind of forceful I guess

Gfwc had the same problem when fitting his box, turns out his was down to the dogbone mount bolt being too long and denting his rack

I have a new rack in the garage with new fluid lines and wiring connected, just the weather is awful!

i had exactly the same i changed angle sensor and pump it turned out it was my rack tiny bit of power steering at 11 0 clock but heavy everywhere else

Almost makes it sound like the subframe and rack should be dropped off the car to do it haha.

I've seen the damage to the rack it's definitely his rack :D

This is what's caused all this hassle! Turns out it was the same problem as George's, dogbone mount bolt was too long...

Christ, what a shame. Where did the bolt come from?

Pretty sure I've mixed it up and put the dog bone in the bell housing

Paul is that a dent in your steering rack go all the way thru? Ive got the same problems as you at the moment haha! And am 100% sure my rack has a dent in just like yours haha.

I don't think it pierces the rack, just compresses it enough to affect the inner workings of the rack.

If the rack tube (working cylinder) is not nicely round at any point, the piston seal won't be able to stop higher pressure fluid leaking past to the lower pressure side of it, and losing all hydraulic assistance:
