No power steering after gearbox is put in

Featured Replies

Today was the day I put my box back in my Vrs, All was going so well until I started it up, reversed off the drive and with power steering went to turn back right and had nothing, steering went rock hard!

I checked the two earths that go to the starter motor and admittedly one was loose so I done that up but I've checked everything! All the other earths and the plugs too the pump and it's all good.

Plugged it into vcds and it just comes up with no response from controller in the steering section :(

What more can I do

Thanks

  • Well the new rack is back on with the right bolt in the dogbone and we have success! Now time to run the clutch in thanks to everyone who gave advice

  • sounds like theres no power getting to pump which to me i check earths again if no joy check live and earth on pump

  • Check fuse number 7 (5 Amp) in the cabin fusebox. If that's blown, it might be a simple fix.

Check fuse number 7 (5 Amp) in the cabin fusebox. If that's blown, it might be a simple fix.

Just checked the fuse and it's fine, do you think a pump would stop working just like that?

AFAIK Only one of the thick cables going to the starter is an earth; the one that goes to one of the mounting bolts. Is that the one that was loose?

  • Author

Erm no it wasn't the one that goes onto the mounting bolt it was the one on the back of the starter

If all the earths have been checked, plugs have been checked and fuses have been checked, I'd be getting the multimeter / test light out and check the big main plug on the front of the pump, live and earth.

OK, that's the main 12V feed to the starter.  That being loose wouldn't cause any damage to anything else I don't think.

Checked the 50A strip fuse in the battery box yet?

No breaks in the strip fuse, so you're saying to pull the big plug off (I just broke the clip) and test the live?C2BD821A-7C6A-42B4-9C98-736BCE82AC92_zps

The earths are okay

Pull the 4-way plug off too and see if you have 12V on pin 4 when ignition is on.

If it's getting power that rules out fuses etc.

Next step is to change the pump I guess.

Let's not think about that yet anyway since it's probably something simple.

I'll give it a go tomorrow, although I've never used a multi metre :D

  • Author

I just put a multi metre on it (I right in thinking, take the plug off, shove one prong into the live terminal and run the other prong to the other live terminal on the pump?) and do the same for the earth? If so the earths showing fault...

Meter set to volts dc.

Red probe to pin that red/black wire goes to, black probe to pin that brown wire is connected to. Careful that you don't touch the probes together while they're doing their probing.

Then, if that gives you 12V OK, unplug the 4-way connector too, leave the black meter probe on the brown wire of the two-way connector (or any other earth point) and see if pin 4 of the 4-way has 12V when ignition is switched on.

Right this is the metre I have,

I took the big plug off the pump, the one with the red and brown wire in, I put the side that lights up of the multi metre in the red side of the plug and then put the other part of the multi metre on the male connection on the pump and the metre lite up saying 12v (with the ignition on)

Then done the same for the brown side and no lights appeared

Put both probes into the loom connector instead, one on each pin, but as I say, be careful not to touch the metal probe points on each other while they're contacting the connector pins.

That red/black is a permanent 12V feed, so ignition doesn't need to be on for that test.

You've proved that 12V is getting to the pump by what you've already done, but doing what I'm trying to describe will prove the main earth is OK too.

  • Author

Okay so just to clarify, put both probes from my multimeter in the brown side of the plug, without touching the probes together, I just want to make sure as electrics isn't my strong point lol

  • Sponsor

No, one in the brown side, the other in the red/black side.

Leave it 'til the morning if you're not confident. I can take a pic of what I'm trying to describe.

I did try that earlier and nothing happened I don't think, i will check it again tomorrow tho

Would check that the cable from pump to column hadn't been caught too, runs along the chassis leg, then along bulkhead with a connector on bottom of Column, I would also clean that Earth up your ve pictured as it looks like it's got lots of white oxidation on it, and there's an earth other side of chassis leg to where you have pictured too would be worth a check

  • Author

I'll give it a check tomorrow, there is a possibility it got squashed when the box came out or went back in I suppose

I was thinking "They shouldn't be linked" but something must have been knocked or trapped.  Best just check all the wiring. :)

I have no idea if I'm honest, I hate fault finding in wired :( I remember doing it with my abs wire it took ages!

  • Author

Right I put the live of the multi metre in the live of the plug and the neutral in the neutral of the plug and the 12v light come on the multi metre, cleaned all the earths. I don't know what else to do I'm loosing interest in it tho it's just annoying me :(

Check the switched live now on pin 4 of the 4-way connector; ignition on, other probe on any earth.
