Koonlung K1S hidden dash cams... anyone got one?

Featured Replies

I am looking for a discreet remote camera(s) dash camera and have come across the Koonlung K1S they retail at around £195 (eBay) or £220 (official supplier) both from UK suppliers, obviously they can be bought from abroad cheaper (but you get the import duty / returns issues associated with buying from outside the EU)

The SD card is not included in the above price either.

So has anyone bought one? are they as good as the review seems?

I hoped no one would notice that  :x

That looks a very tidy and well thought out bit of kit. I like the idea of front and rear, and the little control unit to set everything up so that the settings are exactly the same on both.

Have been holding off getting one until I change cars but this is definitely worth considering.

Install looks fairly simple, front camera could sit behind rear view mirror. Not sure how the rear camera would sit in an etstae but I'm sure it would work ok.

Thanks for sharing.

Hyphons has one, I'll get him to post his opinion

I've had a bad experience so far.. it kept crashing every time the memory card filled up (class 6 16gb Samsung) I contacted the seller from Amazon and it turns out it may well have been my own dopiness, I'm now running a Class 10 34gb SanDisk card so will be testing that and won't know if it was a problem with the SD card until its full (although it likely is) the in car microphone to record audio is pants :D it picks it up, just very quiet, the rear camera picks up sound better than the front

What I will say is it's okay quality, you can't really read numberplates from a distance though, see this example here

This is zoomed in up to the point I can read the numberplate in front of me, but notice the car in the drive's numberplate is not readable at all

Now look how close I actually was when I was able to finally zoom in to read a number plate

Not a great distance at all

It's up to you whether you purchase or not, the quality is good, I wouldn't say great but it does me the job

The GPS is a rough 5mph off (to be expected of course) and at first start up can take a couple of minutes to kick in (a pretty voice will tell you the GPS is ready and she also goes bing bing recording started) the device also beeps a few times when the memory card is full but obviously carries on recording overwriting the first video in the cycle, one thing I did notice is that whenever you save a file not only will the device tell you the video file is protected (it will also on occasion save the video before or after dependent on when you hit save) it still got over written.. but whether this was due to my SD card not being a class 10 I don't know and will be testing this likely on Tuesday, it also saves any protected files to a separate folder

Knowing what you do now, would you buy another?

One of my big requirements are discreetness,

It is important to read number plates and IMO it does that ok ... if they are further away than you have proved to be readable then do you need to be able to read it?

As for the sound being carp... That's probably not a bad thing!!

I probably would yes, are you rear windows tinted? If they are there's no hope in hell of seeing the rear camera from outside, mine is very much on show but I haven't got rear window tint, the front is practically invisible

Yes the rear window is sunset glass.

I really rate the Blackvue cameras but at £150+ per camera it's not a cheap option when fitting a pair of them.... this however is not my main concern for the MKIII Superb, rather the interior mirror / sensor / camera is pretty large so there is no way I can hide a Blackvue behind the mirror, hence the discreet dash cam search

Did you ever get the Koonlung camera(s)? If you did how have you found it?

No, in the end I went for the Thinkware F750, whilst it is not bad, I doubt I would buy another... oh and it killed my 64GB micro sd card yesterday after just 6 months. (reformatted regularly - the camera reminds you to do it, it will no longer format though)

Thanks for replying :). I think I'll end up with the Blackvue to be honest; it's the closest I've seen that does everything i want. Just need to find some more reviews/experiences regarding how long it lasts considering it's high price tag.

I had the DR400(?) in my MKII Superb for 3 years and a pair of DR380’s in the Yeti for just under 2 ½ years without any problems, I’m also in the process of fitting 3x DR650S camera’s to our trucks.
