Indeed. A very sad and rare racing incident not too dissimilar to the tragic accident that claimed young Henry Surtees a few years back.

The ONLY upside to this is that he died doing what he loved to do...

Unbelievable that this sort of accident keeps on happening.

43 years ago Helmut Marko lost an eye to a debris hitting his helmet, and there have been many fatal and near-fatal occurences since.

To me indycar doesn't seem to have the safety of F1

The cars are a lot heavier built (min weight is about 400lbs more I think) to cope with hitting the walls at up to 240mph, as opposed to spinning into the wide open F1 runoff.

When you see the crashes they have week in week out, it's clear the cars are pretty safe.

However yet another impact to the head should surely re-open the closed cockpit debate F1 had a few years back.
