Replacing Brake Shoes - Fabia I (1.2 HTP)

Featured Replies

Have any owners fitted new brake shoes without removing the hub? Removal of the hub requires a 30mm 12pt (bi-hex) socket (which I don't have) AND the fitting of a new hub nut (approx £10 each).

How much more difficult does it make the job if you don't remove the hub, and is it simply worth buying the socket because of the time it will save?

Also, has anyone ever bought/used these for getting the springs off and did they work well (seem quite cheap so I'm worried they might not work all that well);

The drum comes off without removing the hub, just take the wheel off and remove the PH3 CS setscrew, drum will then come off.

I know that sepulchrave; had the drums off several times. Haynes recommends taking the hub off to change the shoes.

I've changed shoes and fitting kit without. Just a bit of a 'jiggle things past' sort of thing.

This ^^

I don't use Haynes manuals, In fact I can't remember the last time I even looked at one. I imagine Haynes feel it's easier to do the shoes with the hub off rather than impossible with it on, on the other hand it's impossible to remove the hub if you don't have the correct tool so it's therefore easier to do the shoes with the hub on, if you see what I mean.

I did lots of jiggling but could not remove/fit shoes without removing the brake cylinder. But that's much easier thn removing the hub.
