Win 10 Clean Install

Featured Replies

Ok so I've done the upgrade, I just boot into setup and clean install ??

From what I have read there's no key needed ??

Anyone had any hiccups along the way I should worry about ??

Just do a clean install from the option somewhere in the control panel. No key should be needed as long as it is activated before the clean install.

Make sure you're activated first.

Then just do a clean install and skip entering a key in the installation.

You're good to go. Done this on 2 of my machines.

Cool.

Thought as much. Want to use a new SSD so I'll go old skool and boot from the USB I made for the upgrade.

Thanks

as I am not computer literate, is windows 10 an upgrade,i.e. does it go on top of windows 8.1, or is that version completely removed altogether.

are all your stored items removed as well

With a regular upgrade, you will keep your old stuff and programs. But it owerwrites win8/7. Its a new operating system.

thank you gromle,

so its more or less an addition to windows 7 and 8, not a complete removal

Before you go ahead with this make sure all your programs will work with Windows 10 as many old ones will not!

Careful... changing the drive may cause it not to activate... I fell into this trap

I thought of that so it went in before the upgrade. It's just sat there empty waiting for me to hit the button.

How did you get around the issue ?? Phone call to MS ??

I ended up reinstalling W7 and upgrading again.

YMMV as i was using the insider preview originally... and the auth servers may have been hammered still

Its more like it overwrites the old windows. There will probably be some leftover untill you some day does a clean install. But I dont see the point in doing that as long the pc is stable and doesnt slow down.

if it's anything like the usual Windows up grade, it'll save the old OS ,save it to somewhere and install W10, giving you the option to go back. Me- I'm setting up a fresh W7 partition to upgrade to W10 ,so if I have problems, I can go back to W7 etc. I've seen these so called magical windows New systems before i've had W98 FE, and then tried SE =garbage. Milienium, also crap. W2K, almost there, and XP- best yet, till W7. So for me- jury is out till I try it. THAT'S why I'll keep it on a new partition.
