European Car of the Year 2006 is...

Featured Replies

The new clio

Examples of previous winners (for a smile) gratefully appreciated :D

Nissan Micra in 1993 I think (according to the sticker in the back of the car I learnt to drive on!). Wouldn't surprise me if it was still running - sold on with 100k on in 2 years still as good as new :D

Chris

I heard this year's winner was the Toyota Prius?

... or was that in a different section....

Current (and about to be replaced) Toyota Yaris and the Toyota Prius

Alfa and Fiat have a strong record in this event too.

After a bit of searching HERE'S the link for the previous winners.

EDIT TO ADD: Prius was the 2005 winner - so that was last year. Clio is the 2006 winner.

ahh that explains it.....

I also found this link for previous winners....

Some example of why COTY ain't that good an award

1979 Talbot Horizon

1980 Lancia Delta

1989 Fiat Tipo

1990 Citoren XM

Enough said

Oops.Will amend it!

Some really hideous cars in that list!!!

A nice abberation in 1978 though.

Porsche 928, very out of character for the ECOTY.

Is that the abhorrent pile of ****e that was powered by a vw transporter van engine?

This car of the year thing does smack of politics.

No you're thinking 924

928 was pretty good but I remember at the time the outcry - so what did they do they made the Talbot Horizon COTY the following year.

My favourite was the 1977 winner - Rover SD1

Er, no

It's powered by one of these:

At least in my case...

7034.attach

The 924 turbo is not a bad car, either ;)

:D

Am I missing something here ,how can it be car of the year for NEXT YEAR

Surely for car of the year, it should be a car that was built and released in the current year. It is like presenting film awards etc for 2006, for films made, and shown in 2005 .

Used to be announced In January... but that changed when... The Talbot Horizon was crowned.

Bit of tragic year that.

The presentation takes place Jan/Feb though. And it's for new cars launched in the previous 12 months.
