remote key stolen

Featured Replies

I have an Octavia 2008.

The spare radio key, together with documents containing my home address, have been stolen.

Since I have no closed shelter for the car, it has become at a great risk of being stolen.

I went to Skoda dealer in Cairo who changed the key code for about US$36.

Then, they said that, with the code changed, the stolen key can’t now start the engine, but can still open the doors! To prevent that, they claimed, all door locks need to be changed, costing about US$375 plus labour!

Is that claim is correct? Or, only recoding the receiver on the car is needed?

If that claim is correct, should entire locks be changed?

That is correct, if you don't change the locks then the stolen key can still be used to open the doors.

What about an alarm system? Wouldn't it be cheaper?

One will be able to open the door but if the alarm system ain't disabled then it doesn't allow to start the engine and a terrible noise goes on.

Thanks langers2k.

But I've read somewhere that the code on the stolen key may be removed from the database on the car's computer.

If not, the locks are just hardware, as I understand. They should be operated by signals from the computer.

Will be grateful if you give some details.

Thanks jevpls.

The dealer said that they have changed the code, and the stolen key can’t now start the engine.

An alarm system will really be an extra protection.

Regards.

Both the drivers door and ignition locks are mechanical so the key will still work in them.

If the key has been removed from the cars computer then it should no longer start the car nor should the buttons unlock/lock the car. It will still unlock the drivers door and disable the steering lock.

I'm not sure if your car has an alarm or if the alarm will go off if the door is unlocked using the stolen key.

Assuming it doesn't sound the alarm it's very easy to either steal items from the car, load the car on a lorry or even switch the immobiliser and drive the car away.

Personally I'd get the locks done.
